Digital camera Review: Better than masking tape
Summary: 4 Stars
I use blue painter's masking tape to fasten the gels on my speedlights, and it gets the job done for pennies (doesn't leave glue marks, too).
But there are times I feel that my flash has to 'dress for the occasion' so I went ahead and got the Fxtra along with the Lumiquest Cinch Strap.
It's a more elegant solution for sure, and the storage pouch keeps the gels organized and handy (Note that they do protrude to the right, since the gels are wider than the flash head). The plastic material used is thick gauge, but pliant enough and fits flush - at least with my SB800's
The slot for the gel-in-use has a notch to ease entry/exit but can still be fiddly. So when I'm rushing, I found it easier to sandwich the gel between the flash and the clear window. Works well since the velcro used for both the Fxtra and Cinchstrap have a very nice and positive feel to it. Not likely to fray and die like the cheapo 'hook and loop fasteners'
So is it worth $20? If only for that rare fine print "Made in the USA" - I'd
say 'Yes'. Would I buy another one? Probably not. At least, not at $20.
