Digital camera reviews of Magellan Triton 2000 Waterproof Hiking GPSDigital camera Review: An Improved Triton 2000 Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It is obvious from reading earlier reviews that the Triton 2000 had many problems. I am happy to report that I have not experienced the multitude of problems earlier reviewers (mostly in 2008) did. Obviously the Triton 2000 was put out too quickly. Now there have been several firmware updates and I have found that this is a pretty good handheld GPS. I can't think of one feature I would like to have that the Triton does not already offer. A full listing of the Triton's features can be found in other reviews or in the Amazon description of the Triton. Some of the added features such as the flashlight, MP3 player and flashlight are adequate, but certainly not great. However, when you get down to purpose of a GPS handheld, I think the Triton performs well. The Triton gives accurate positions and worked great on a trial route I did over the weekend. I was able to upload TOPO maps to the Triton without a problem after speaking to a representative at National Geographic TOPO!. The tech support at National Geographic is absolutely stellar. If you have a problem uploading TOPO! maps, go to National Geographic's support- I tried Magellan first and even after several calls I didn't get the help I needed.
There's a lot the Triton manual doesn't cover and I had to contact Magellan's support several times. I had an early problem with the SD card not being recognized correctly. I have mixed feelings about Magellan's support. There is a toll free number, a representative comes on quickly and technical support is offered even on weekends which is all good. What caused my mixed feelings about Magellan's tech support is that the depth of Magellan's tech support is a bit shallow. I spoke with a Resolution Team specialist about my SD card not being recognized as having enough space on it to upload a map. Magellan could not help me. I again found the answer to my problem via National Geographic's excellent TOPO! technical support. The SD card problem is something Magellan definitely should have been able to solve as the problem involved their software, Vantage Point. All that said, I think Magellan sincerely does the best it can but the support is obviously very limited.
A few miscellaneous complaints- I am bothered by the very short battery life (carry a lot of batteries!) and the fact that the Triton straight out of the box does not offer anything other than a really poor baseline map which you can't do anything with. So if you're going to purchase the Triton, add $100 to the price for a TOPO map. It bothers me that this is a rather hidden cost. I already have TOPO maps so it wasn't a problem for me but I feel bad for the person that drops $400 for the Triton and then realizes they have to spend $100 right away to have a handheld that can do anything of real use. It seems that Magellan could partner with National Geographic and perhaps offer one free TOPO state series map or at least give a substantial discount. Magellan had a great offer for a free TOPO map but that ended in June. My last complaint is that the Triton can only be connected to a PC. So if you're a Mac user, don't buy this item. I'm lucky and have both a PC and a Mac so I was able to do ok but I think Magellan is way behind the times in not offering a product that is both PC and Mac compatible.
Because this is a review, I of course want to give an accurate picture (good and bad) of what I have experienced with the Triton 2000. I feel that there are still things that Magellan could do to make the Triton 2000 experience better- mostly in the support area. I also wish they would do something permanently about the hidden $100 TOPO surprise, I'd like to see a stronger manual and most of all Magellan should get with the times and make the Triton Mac compatible. But in the end, now that I have a properly functioning Triton 2000, I am very happy with it and expect to use it for years to come.
