Digital camera Review: Tonka Toy Tough
Summary: 5 Stars
This monopod lives up to the promotions. It's light, tough and versatile. Unfortunately, the Manfrotto 488RC4 midi ball swivel head and quick release mounting plate I put on it increased it's weight substantially. However, compared to the Canon 5D with the USM L IS 100-400mm lens which I pile on top of it, it is relatively light, but sturdy. And it could easily handle much larger cameras and lenses. And, hey, I'd be lying if I said I didn't think the carbon fibre (oops, MagFiber) isn't just plain cool.
My main concern, after watching my students use (and abuse) a variety of Bogen (Manfrotto) tripods for video cameras for a number of years, was that the construction quality wouldn't be satisfactory. Happily, I have been proven wrong - this thing is well made and very easy to use. I even like the ball swivel head.
Still, after it's all said and done, I've found the monopod to be of limited usefulness (just like many photo accessories). Sometimes, you'll get better results with a tripod. Other times, handheld. Nevertheless, I carry this tool with me whenever I go shooting. Occasionally, it fills a need that no other solution can and I really can't imagine a better one.

The Mag Fiber series of Monopods comprise a revolutionary design by combining the strength of magnesium and carbon fiber. The monopod is crafted from carbon fiber using an exclusive, patented process. Under intense pressure, extra long carbon fibers are combined with resin to produce a stronger tube that absorbs more vibration - and with a wall thickness of only 1.2mm! Manfrotto engineers have also replaced all aluminum components with magnesium. The switch represents a lateral move in sturdiness, yet a substantial gain in strength and overall reduction of weight. The 694 is very user-friendly, with quick-action adjustable lever locks that instantly secure leg extensions in place with no slippage or rotation.
