Digital camera Review: Sync feature does not work between Vista and XP
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this portable HD to back up two different computers and also to sync certain files across both computers. The product literature said that this was possible. What I found was that the very basic sync software that comes with the HD is not capable of syncing between Vista and XP machines because the tree structure is different. There is no feature in the software to designate custom settings. This would be an almost trivial software fix and yet Maxtor simply does not offer it, and they don't tell you that until you read the actual product manual that comes with the HD.

Also, when connecting the HD to my Vista machine there was no problem. But, when I connected it to my XP desktop the drive was not recognized. I was never able to connect the HD to this desktop XP.

I think this is an example of a company that probably has a pretty good piece of equipment but that messed it up by sloppy and amateurishly written software. This caused me a lot of aggravation and I finally just sent the drive back.

Digital camera Review: They fail easily
Summary: 2 Stars

Make sure to get a protective case. I never dropped mine but IT SEEMS like if you stuff it in a backpack with other things the littles pressure (like being cramped up between two books) will cause it to start it faling.

Had the brand new one for about 6 months when it started failing every now and then. Got a replacement from the manufacturer and that one lasted me all of 2 weeks and went completely dead.

When they work they are great and easy to use... How long they work is a whole other topic. I have a WD model that workd just as well but has lasted me waaayyyy longer than these.

Digital camera Review: USB not working
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought this drive 2 days ago, everything worked fine out of the box. Went on a trip and forgot the provided USB 2.0 cable so I went to Office Depot and bought an aptiva USB 2.0 cable. The drive will not work with the generic cable, not sure why. Plugged in my digital camera using the same cable and the camera's storage card shows up fine. I will test the drive with the original cable when I get home, hopefully it still works! Maxtor tech support website is horrible, don't even bother going there for product support.

Digital camera Review: Unplug Backup before reformatting hard drive
Summary: 2 Stars

Loved this little drive until I needed it. At the direction of my IT guy who had spent the whole day trying to fix hard drive, I reformatted the hard drive, but didn't think to unplug the backup that I was counting on. The restore process reformatted the backup drive to the size of the hard drive and erased all the backed up data. Two years lost. Now thinking about a 2nd redundant back up option.

At the first sign of data loss or computer trouble, UNPLUG the back up drive.

Digital camera Review: Vista Business forget it
Summary: 1 Stars

What a nightmare.
The drive finally appeared on my work XP machine - copied all the data I needed for the weekend. I run Vista Business at home - the drive will not appear. Granted, the Seagate website has plenty of Knowledge base articles but none of the work.
The initial sketchiness of the tinkering it took to get it to work on XP left me a little worried - being optimistic I thought Vista would detect it no problem. Disk Management is unable to do anything with this drive under Vista Business. I have a dead weight, unless Seagate e-mail support comes up with something, but I wont hold my breath.

Western Digital drives were 20 bucks more - I'm really thinking I should have just stuck with a drive I know works. Man I'm a Scrooge.
