Digital camera reviews of Memorex 16X DVD-R (100-Pack Spindle)Digital camera Review: Always Dependable Summary: 5 Stars
Theres really not a whole lot to say about these DVD-R's...they have never failed me...always a successful write at low or high speed. You also cant go wrong with the price :)
Digital camera Review: As always, top quality from Memorex Summary: 5 Stars
Haven't had one fail to burn on me yet. Can't really get much better than that.
Digital camera Review: Avoid Memorex DVDs Summary: 1 Stars
I'm in the process of recording many of my VHS tapes into DVDs. Recently I bought a 100-spindle pack of Memorex DVDs. If you want to become familiar with the "burning process failed" or other similar message [even at reduced recording speeds], these are the ones to buy. About 1 out of 4 fail & end up as coasters. I've not had poor results with TDK, Verbatim, or Maxell; an expert pal of mine said Fuji is the best he's used and that Verbatim is starting to get quality problems from some of its outsourced manufacturers [in the UAE, for example]. Pay the extra 2 or 3 cents per DVD and get quality - NOT Memorex.
Digital camera Review: Be careful of your drive model Summary: 1 Stars
A lot of people don't realize that a particular brand/model of blank dvd must have its configuration programmed into the burner's firmware. This is why, for example, a lot of standalone dvd burners need to use relatively old 4x blanks or you get errors.
Well this is a relatively new 16x brand/model media. I tried it on my NEC 1300A flashed to the latest firmware (tried 1.08 and 1.0C), and not a one of these will work at all. Nero spits them out. Wish I had known ahead of time.
I took advantage of cheap prices and picked up a new NEC 3540A and sure enough, it burns these media at 16x right out of the box, and they play fine on my cheap old Toshiba dvd player.
In other words: this media is new and probably will only work on newer model dvd burners, and recent models flashed to the latest firmware, and many not at all.
This is not to say these won't work in your drive. But it ought to be a very recent model drive, and it might be worth researching first.
Digital camera Review: Be careful what you order... Summary: 1 Stars
For reasons that are not clear to me, my DVD-R burners only like to use 8X speed DVD's, not 16X. I like Memorex and found that Amazon claims that they stock 8X spped Memorex DVD-R's. Since it is getting harder to find the 8X speed, I was pleased to find them at the Amazon site and ordered 200 of these DVD-R's. Amazon ingnored my specific order and substitued 16X, which don't work for me. I kept them and will be able to use them for other things... but not for the job I intended. I wish Amazon would be more careful and only send you what you specifically order. The decision to make the substition was not mine and Amazon's substition set back a project for which I needed those specif 8X speed DVD-R's.
