Digital camera Review: Best DESKTOP Mouse

I accumulated a drawer-full of mice over a couple of decades, but this mouse, which I purchased from Amazon almost a year ago, is the best.
The removable wireless receiver is a dongle that snaps into the bottom of the mouse, making it easier to transport if you want to work on a neighbor's computer with your own mouse. The dongle is meant to save battery life (it turns off the mouse when it is snapped into the bottom), but I leave my mouse on all the time and rarely have to change the battery anyway.
I thought a "notebook" mouse might be too small, but out the size and shape of this mouse is better than my others. This model, the 4000, has a side-by-side scroll useful for spreadsheets and maps, and a magnifier button that I have used occasionally to get a closer look at a product picture on Amazon.
Since I use this with a desktop computer, I use an old hokey-puck-like "Microsoft Wireless Mouse Receiver v.1.0" (salvaged from an inferior desktop mouse). The receiver can be six feet way (under my desk) but I never have any problems with reception. An alternative for those who want the Notebook Optical Mouse 4000's original receiver to be closer would be to attach it to a USB extension cord.
This mouse has no problems with XP, 32-bit Vista, 64-bit, or Windows 7.
The only problem I have ever seen with this mouse was when it was its settings in Control Panel overlapped with those for the touchpad in an old laptop. The settings for the mouse had to be re-entered manually every time the mouse was re-connected to the laptop.
Those who are new to mouse installation might want to know that you should ignore the disc that comes with the mouse. Instead, download and install the latest driver from the Microsoft website before you plug the mouse receiver into the computer's USB port for the first time. It's also useful to have a spare wired mouse handy so you can navigate when downloading the wireless mouse's drivers for the first time.
