Digital camera reviews of Monster M1000 HD-4 Ultimate High Speed HDTV HDMI Cable (4 feet)Digital camera Review: A previous non-believer converted Summary: 5 Stars
I used to use Monster cables for analog signals, but despite being a network technician, I didn't see any reason to use monster for a digital signal. Then, two things happened...
1) At work, we had bought inexpensive, but "rated" gigabit cat6 cabling. However, when the network traffic really ramped up, we had problems. The speed slowed, errors occurred, etc. When we went back to a higher quality cable...BAM...the problems vanished.
2) So then I had a thought. Maybe there is something to using a higher quality digital cable. So I called a friend who has the same setup as I do, and he brought over his TV and his Playstation 3. (The TV, for those interested, was the Samsung UN55B7000 55" LED TV). We put them side by side and connected an HDMI 1.3 certified 3 foot cable to one and the Monster M1000 4 foot HDMI cable to the other. We tried four different Blu-Ray discs (Star Trek Wrath Of Khan, Alien vs Predator, The Other Boleyn Girl, and The Wrestler) and one game (InFamous).
My wife hooked up the cabling so that we wouldn't know which was which, and we wrote down our honest results, because we were both curious. Here is what we wrote down:
ST Wrath of Khan - generic cable: "When the shot in the Genesis cave came up, you could see some pixelization when the camera panned, and the explosion of Khan's ship looked a little jagged."
ST Wrath of Khan - monster cable: "The picture is brighter, but the blacks are clearer and cleaner. The pixelizing that was on the other version is completely gone, and the motion is 100% smooth. In space, you could read the small lettering on the ships a lot easier."
Alien Versus Predator - generic cable: "The action scenes looked awesome, but sometimes when the motion was really fast and the camera was moving, the Samsung motion blur smoothing didn't seem keep up, and it was just a little jagged, but only just a little."
Alien Versus Predator - monster cable: "The jagged parts are gone, but the big difference is that since this is a very dark movie, there was a really, REALLY obvious difference. The blacks were very black, but you could make out every little detail of what was in the darkness, and you could make out every little ripple of the predators' cloaking shield."
The Other Boleyn Girl - generic cable: "The colors seemed a little brighter and looked a little better, but it was harder to make out some of the details in the dark scenes."
The Other Boleyn Girl - monster cable: "The colors were a little muted, but in the scenes where it was a little darker, you could make out the colors and details really well. When the final execution took place and the camera cut to the king, you could really see his face and the colors on his clothing, where it was harder to see on the other TV."
The Wrestler - both cables: "We can't tell a single difference other than they just look a tiny bit different. Not better or worse - just different."
InFamous - generic cable: "When a really big explosion is triggered, the picture seemed to stagger a little bit, almost like the system was catching up. I wanted to crank up the brightness in the game because during the night scene we were in on the final island, some items got washed together."
InFamous - monster cable: "There was no staggering during big explosions, and in the final island night scene, it was a little easier to make out all the items, and it seemed like I could see targets a little farther away."
So to summarize, here's what seemed to happen in our tests:
*-The contrast ratio in dark scenes seemed to be considerably and noticeably better with the monster cable. It was a lot more dramatic than we both thought. Simply put, the darker the scene, the bigger the difference.
*-In bright scenes without really fast motion, it was nearly impossible to tell any difference whatsoever.
*-In fast action scenes, the monster cable TV didn't seem to pixelate, especially in the sci-fi movies.
*-There seemed to be no audio difference between the cables whatsoever.
*-In the game, there did seem to be less staggering, but that could possibly have been something with the consoles (hard drive fragmentation, cooling...who knows...)
Now mind you, this was on what is arguably the best TV made as of July 2009. However, after seeing this, I swapped out all three of my HDMI cables. Should you do the same thing? I'd say if you have high end gear and like highly-produced sci-fi and action movies on Blu-Ray and sci-fi/action games on the PS3, then it's worth it.
Now for the twist...
I don't want to say what "Generic" cable we used because it did have a brand name and I don't want to bad-mouth them, but the cable was just under $10 and was 3 feet long.
We then tried a third cable and compared it to the monster cable. It was a BJC Series-1 Belden Bonded-Pair HDMI Cable from BlueJeans cable -- a company with whom we've had good luck. We used a 6 foot cable from them, which cost us $26.50 plus shipping. The difference between these two cables was much less significant. We still felt that the monster cable gave better contrast in the dark scenes of AvP and ST:Wrath of Khan, but the $26.50 BlueJeansCable cable eliminated all of the pixelizing that we saw with the generic.
So here's what I'd suggest:
Upscaling DVD player or similar 480p-720p device: Use generic
Cable TV DVR: Use generic
Satellite Receiver: BlueJeans
A 1080i device anywhere in the chain: BlueJeans
Playstation 3 or high-end Blu-Ray player going to a 1080p 120hz/240hz TV, especially with motion-blur capability: Monster M1000
