I wanted to replace my cable company's rented SB5100 ($3/month going to $5) with my own modem. I hesitated a bit since nowhere, including the cable provider, did I find a statement that this modem would easily replace the SB5100. It did, with not a single hitch, and it has worked perfectly. I don't really know if it's faster or not, but for me that wasn't the point. I'm hoping it will last years, just like the one it replaced (which was still working fine). It will pay for itself in less than a year. The only pain was the cable company's phone menu to get to a person so I could register the new modem. We purchased this modem because of having a DOA modem from another seller that was the SB5101U, and expected to get something better this time because of the good reviews. So this one was also in a box that wasn't original and not even covered in plastic. It would not turn on when plugged in, despite trying multiple outlets. I was so frustrated because of buying two different models of this modem from two different sellers and getting two different DOA used modems. We ended up just going to Best Buy and paying 30 dollars more and making sure we could plug it in and try it before we took it home. Sometimes it pays off to pay a little more and buy from a reliable seller who isn't dishonest like this one. This definitely wasn't a NEW modem.Digital camera Review: Decent product

I bought this as a direct replacement for one I was renting from my internet service provider. It is the same model, and aside from having to go through customer service at the service provider to register the new modem, everything works perfectly. I bought this Modem when I move into my new apartment because I'm getting Comcast internet service and as far as I know this is the cheapest one made by brand-name and that's compatible with the service. I used to rent an exact same one in the older apartment, so I installed this modem twice. In both situations I didn't come across any problems and I'm not that computer-savvy. You don't even have to us the CD that came with the modem. So far it's working reliably as the one I used in the old apartment.
