Digital camera reviews of Motorola T9500XLR 25-Mile 2-Way Radio Pair

Digital camera Review: Good Buy
Summary: 4 Stars

This has been very useful not just for fun but @ remote locations of work related business. I would suggest easier menu layout. the ability to silence PTT confirmation. Better Clip design recommended. overall best buy considering what is out there.

Digital camera Review: Good Pair for our Family Outings
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Primarily we use these radios on shopping malls, camping and theme parks. This pair has the most features compared to the previous 3 pairs that we have used before. You need to read the manual to really take advantage of all the features the unit offers. For the price, it is a good value.

The Pros & Features:

-It comes with NiMh battery packs. You can use ordinary alkaline or your own rechargeable "AA's" batteries. But the charging dock station will only work with the supplied battery packs. Still, it is nice to be able to use regular batteries on the road if you forget to charge the battery pack.
-The dock not only makes sure you have the radios charged and ready to use, it also makes it easier to find where they are. Before, we just throw them away in the drawers and finding them the next time we need them becomes a challenge.
-Combination GMRS/FRS channels. Upper part of the PTT (Push To Talk) button is high power/lower part is low power.
-Weather channels, just press "+" for 3 seconds.
-Attaching the removeable clip is easy. They are also easy to lose as they are pretty small. Nice feature about the clip is that it swivels. This lessen the stress on the radio when you move or sits.
-Multiple alert tones to choice from. "Vibra-Alert" is a really a welcomed feature as we often could not hear the other party calling around a noisier environment like busy shopping malls.
-privacy codes
-Hands-free communication with or without headset, accessories - you have to turn on IVOX
-Nice to have a choice between a black and yellow faceplates. Changing the faceplate is easy but a little tricky. You do not need to unscrew anything. The faceplate is just a snap on.

Room for Improvement:

-This is my 4th pair of radios, still I have not found one that can really make a good trasmission/reception even at 5 miles distance. Everybody advertise transmission up to 25 miles distance, but the only device I know that I can depend on is my cell phone.
-Sleeker design is welcome. Can the antennas be a little shorter?
-Hands-free communication is difficult. The first few words always gets cut off. Also, it is very easy to accidentally press on the PTT button while on IVOX, and that automatically cancels the hands-free back to Push-To-Talk. It takes several presses on the buttons to go back to IVOX.

Digital camera Review: Good Way to Keep in Touch
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought these radios primarily to take on a family cruise & overall was satisfied with them. I was able to track down family members or communicate with family members that stayed in another room pretty easily. The hard part was either the battery running out (need to recharge daily), or someone not having the radio with them, or someone not knowing fully how to operate it (it's not difficult). Overall it's a good radio for what it's intended to do.

Digital camera Review: Good radio
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros: Used with other motorolla and non motorolla radios and the sound quality was good. Battery holds charge for several days in normal use.
Cons: 25 mile range is bizarre because the most that I got was about a mile and a half.

Digital camera Review: Good radio, nice price
Summary: 4 Stars

I got these radios to keep a safety contact when I'm nearby in the forest, with hills and of course lots of trees in between. The effective range was about 2 miles in this condition, which was good enough for me. The radios are light to carry, they come with a handy belt clip. There's a dock for easy recharging. Using it was rather easy and intuitive, although the menu key that has several functions seem a bit confusing at first -- just adjust all settings with the manual in hand and then don't touch them again :-)

I'm not sure how long the battery lasts: I've used it for whole mornings or whole afternoons mostly sitting there on standby with maybe a few minutes worth of chat and it took several days like this for the battery indicator to get down to 2/3rd.
It's a NiMH battery so it *will* have aging issues after a few years but by the time they start loosing their charge it will be more economical to simply buy a new set than replace the batteries.

I do give it 4-star instead of 5 just because of the "iVox" hands-free feature: I just couldn't get it to work and the manual is not too helpful on that one. I kept setting the mode on, then later when I'd try to use it nothing would happen and I'd realize the iVox mode had gone off in between. I'm dubious of the utility of that mode anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

If there's one feature I miss: I wish the radio would also display the current time. Like that I could skip carrying a watch. But then most people probably don't care about that :-)
