Digital camera reviews of Myine Electronics IR001 WiFi Internet Radio AdaptorDigital camera Review: A Few Problems with an Excellent Concept - the Myine IRA Summary: 3 Stars
Everything everyone says here about this radio is correct. A nice stack of reviews. Now let me sprinkle a bit of wine vinegar on those flapjacks. Don't misunderstand, I love the thing -- me and my Myine, Myine all Myine! However, the IRA's designers overlooked one compelling use of the thing -- as a bedside radio. Consider:
(1) The garish display light makes one wonder if the Eiffel Tower isn't missing a spotlight somewhere. And no way to turn it off or even dim it? Wear your sunglasses to bed.
(2) No sleep switch? Once on, on forever, unless you mash the remote's little bubble switch again. Bad on your constitution at 2:30 a.m., too awake to settle into slumber again, too groggy to figure out how Lady GaGa and her band got into your bedroom.
(3) This little babe is truly an adapter. Needs a speaker with some juice behind it. Can't even drive a pillow speaker or earphone above a whisper. So keep that 35 pound boom box on the nightstand too.
(4) Nightmare scenario: Must have remote control in hand to channel surf -- fall asleep while listening -- wake up in morning to find aliens abducted remote. Where did they leave it? In slipper? In fuzz under nightstand? In water tumbler? In *gasp* pee bottle????
Wanna hear something REALLY scary? The Myine IRA almost certainly is possessed! Hear my chilling tale, children, and be afraid, for every word is TRUE....
Excited with my new purchase, I quickly program 40 cool-sounding stations. Call them set "A." Listen happily a few weeks until !BOOM! -- the power goes out. Radio zaps MOST of the stations, scattering the survivors randomly among the empty presets. OK, didn't like all those stations anyway, so program 40 BETTER stations -- set "B." Listen happily for a few - !BANG! -- power out again. I press the remote buttons gingerly, fearing the coming flash memory Armageddon, but find the original set "A" miraculously restored to the presets. Hmmmmmm. Well, really liked some of "A" and some of "B," so program a hybrid "C" set. Listen hap - !WHAM!
Did I mention we have power issues where we live?
Now the presets have reverted to the "B" set. I attempt no further reprogramming, lest the spirit in the radio turn ugly. Listen happily until, well, you know -- !WHAP! Now the presets have returned to the "C" set. In fact, I found I could switch between set "B" and set "C" by unplugging and replugging the radio. Cool. Now I have 80 presets!
UNTIL.
The little creature froze up. Couldn't turn it off. Desperately clawed those remote control bubbles, blood collecting under my thumbnail, until I found I could access the menu, where awaited the ominous "Factory Reset" option. There was nothing else I could do.
I reprogrammed set "C," then resolved to buy a UPS. After I plugged the Myine IRA back into the UPS, I found I had set "B" back, and that is what I listen to even now, as I write this review. No more wandering for me -- there be dragons there. Wait. What channel is that? I didn't program that in!! Who's that laughing?
