Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR FS105NA Switch 5Port Metal

Digital camera Review: Don't buy IF you need an Universal Power Adapter
Summary: 3 Stars

Other reviewers have reviewed the product itself well, but I'd like to raise an issue no one has mentioned yet, which may be important for some people...

**If you are looking for a portable 5-port 10/100 network switch with an Universal Power Adapter (100-240V), then don't buy Netgear FS105 (or Linksys SD205 in this case).

**Please ignore my review if you are NOT concerned with the problem I just mentioned. After more than one year of usage, I have not had any other problem besides this one. Please don't vote me down...

FS105 is a small and solid product that deserves FIVE stars, but Netgear decided NOT to include an universal power adapter, which is disappointed. This means your usage will be LIMITED. For example, you may NOT be able to use it as a portable switch for your overseas trip (unless you get an universal power adapter on your own). Nowadays, many manufactures include universal power adapters with their electronics, such as Linksys WRT54GL router and Sony Playstation 3, just to name a few, and these electronics are not even designed for usages such as portability and travel.

What's even worse is that you can *neither* find the voltage range/AC Input information on the product packaging, *nor* in the official specification on Netgear's website. Netgear simply doesn't give you this information anywhere. I had to open the product just to find this out...

Here is the specification on my FS105's power adapter:
Model: DSA-9R-05 AUS
Input: 100-120VAC 50/60Hz 0.3A
Output: 7.5V @ 1A
For those who are looking for a 5-port switch with an universal power adapter:

Both Linksys and Trendnet offer 5-port 10/100 network switches that have similar size to Netgear's FS105. However, they all have the SAME problem: Linksys and Trendnet do NOT list the voltage range/AC Input in their specifications, either. Fortunately, I have found out this information from their customer service...

- Linksys SD205 (110-120V)
- TRENDnet TE100-S5 (110-220V) <--- w/ Universal Power Adapter!

I guess they don't list the voltage range/AC Input in their specifications because it's easier for them to print and release the same specification around the world without the need to modify accordingly. Well, if they use universal power adapters, then it won't be a problem at all...

I hope my review will help... Thanks for reading!

Digital camera Review: Durable and easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

I needed this so that I could split my one ethernet port in my dorm room between two devices. All I had to do was plug it in and it works perfectly. It makes no noise and seems to create little to no heat.

Digital camera Review: EXACTLY what was needed.
Summary: 5 Stars

I needed to be able to connect components in my home theater system and this was PERFECT for the job. Yes, there are a couple of these even cheaper, but sometimes you do get what you pay for. This is a hefty little box for the size and it feels quite solid and well made. While I agree with a couple comments regarding the location of the power plug, it was not a deal killer for me at all. It sits back behind everything and is in no way an eyesore among my TV and game gear. I have it connected to an XBox, my DVR, a Sony BluRay player and have one port still available if I ever decide to connect my TV. I ran an ethernet cable from the modem/router in my media room into the family room via the attic, and once connected, all components worked immediately with no issues at all. We ended up using the extra port for a few days while we were having problems with our wireless network before the replacement router arrived, and the connections on the notebooks were excellent as well. (Wireless module had gone out, ethernet was still working fine obviously!)
This is an WONDERFUL deal for the price, especially with the rebate.

Digital camera Review: Easy to setup and use. Good value!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is extremely easy to install, just plug it in and you are done. I like the metal case a lot better than the similar switches with plastic bodies. With $15 rebate, it is a good value.

Digital camera Review: Excellent Ethernet Switch
Summary: 5 Stars

Easy to use...easy to install...no fuss, no muss. Just connect to your router and away you go. However, connection speeds will be good, not great, especially if you have Fios, then I would to another product will greater speeds. I use this ethernet switch for my Blue-Ray player and my Plasma TV for firmware updates, so this does the job good enough and for the price of $[...] rebate I just could not refuse!
