Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR GS105 ProSafe 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch - 10/100/1000 MbpsDigital camera Review: Netgear GS105 Summary: 3 Stars
NETGEAR GS105 ProSafe 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch
I have purchased several of these switches. The reason being that every time we have a close thunderstorm, they die. One good thing is that they work fine on a 12V battery. I am networked over 650 feet, with the switch in the middle, run by a trolling motor battery. If any other company makes a gigabit switch, I'll switch brands trying for longer life.
Digital camera Review: Not compatible with Intel Pro1000 network adapters Summary: 1 Stars
When connected to Intel Pro 1000 series Ethernet adapters there can be serious problems with this switch ... Inability to connect at 1Gbps, strange speeds, dropped packets. Generally not a good combination
Digital camera Review: Only 100Mbps not gigabit Summary: 1 Stars
When I hooked this up to my gigabit network I was only showing 100Mbps connection. I tried 3 different cables with no luck. I happened to already have a Linksys SD2005 gigabit switch on another part of my network. When a I swapped it in the computer was showing a full gigabit connection. This in my mind isolated the problem to the Netgear device. I am returning it and will buy a different brand...possibly another SD2005 since I haven't had any trouble with it. It might have just been a bad unit but I am not going to take that chance.
Digital camera Review: Outstanding speed Summary: 4 Stars
Outstanding speed, but more suited for under desk or wall-mount than on top of your desk because the lights are on the same side as the cables. In other words, to see the lights, you'll need to have the cables staring you in the face as opposed to being hidden on the back of the unit and flowing off the desk.
Digital camera Review: PS3 Streaming from iMac - Huge improvement! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently setup my PS3 to stream media from my iMac. But, since iMac was on 802.11g wifi, and ps3 was connected at 100Mb, anything more than a small digitial camera video clip had terrible skippage.
I considered getting an 802.11n gigabit router, but since the ps3/imac are in the same general area, and I have a perfectly capable and durable Linksys wifi router, spending $[...] (after rebate) on 1 of these was a no brainer. I actually had to purchase 2 due to my setup, and it was STILL less than most 802.11N gigabit routers.
Result? Night and day difference! I am very pleased.
