Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop SwitchDigital camera Review: 7 months uptime - no problems! Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced a Netgear 5-port Fast Ethernet switch on my desk with this one to get more ports. What I did not count on was the increased speed of a gigabit switch. I frequently sync my desktop Windows email and files with my laptop (MacBook Pro running OSX plus Windows via VMWare Fusion). Both systems have gigabit Ethernet adapters so the transfers are breathtakingly fast through the switch. Just checked a recent sync log. 106 music files -- 490+MB data -- in 14 seconds.
If I ever got ambitious, I'd move this switch down to the basement and put it just downstream from the FIOS router, then use it to connect all the Ethernet drops from various rooms in the house so any in-house system-to-system wired link would be gigabit. I'd still need a multiport gigabit switch at my desk, though -- probably another Netgear.
Like many other users, I unpacked the box, plugged in the power and cables and started using it. Haven't touched it in six months. A great product.
Digital camera Review: A workhorse Summary: 5 Stars
This NetGear switch has been working without a single restart for over a year in my house. Worked on day one and continues to work. Easy to step up too. I fully recommend it.
Digital camera Review: Affordable gigabit switch Summary: 4 Stars
It worked without a single issue for 3 years until power supply went kaput. Netgear said the router has a warranty for 5 years, but just 3 for the power supply. Not a big deal since I've got several ones laying around.
Didn't really benchmark it, but it appears to be working just fine under normal home use.
Digital camera Review: Amazingly simple desktop switch Summary: 4 Stars
The Netgear GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch is quick and easy to set up and get running. Actually, plug it in and you're set to go.
This is a nice little switch for a home or small office. I have set up several of these switches in both locations, the first one over a year ago. Absolutely no problems.
For the money, it's a thumbs up!
Digital camera Review: An excellent gigabit switch Summary: 5 Stars
The housing is all metal and fairly heavy, helping to keep it in place when all the cables are plugged, and probably keeps it cool (Netgear has had problems with overheating products). There are two LED's on each port, indicating 10 or 100 or 1000 (both lit). The adapter is a narrow "sideways" switching power supply which should help to keep your outlets free. Can't say if it will pull down the full ~125 megabytes per second, but my DNS-323 (raid-0, ext2, v1.02 firmware) draws 26MB/s reads using FTP.
An excellent switch for the price. I have actually found that I need a second one.
