Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 1 TB (1 x 1 TB) Desktop Network Attached Storage RND2110Digital camera Review: A good NAS Summary: 4 Stars
I like this product. I enjoy being able to access files from any of the pcs in the house. Being able to access pictures and music using the Playstation is a plus. Primarly, though, I bought the Duo to back up my files. It works (although I had to get Ghost 15 to use an NAS). The included NTI Shadow seems to work well, too, and offers instantaneous backing up of changed files. I have no serious complaints.
If you buy a unit with only 1 drive (as I did), BE SURE to check Netgear's list of compatible drives before buying/installing a second drive. I ended up sending back the first HD that I ordered. The second one, from the list this time, installed easily.
I consider myself an advanced amateur pc user. Setting up the unit's volume and shares is a confusing and perhaps needlessly frustrating experience. The on-screen documentation could be a little more user friendly.
It's a little disappointing that Netgear doesn't include a defragmenting utility. I suspect that, sooner or later, fragmentation will become an issue.
Finally, backing up a considerable amount of data over a home network is a very lengthy process, particularly compared to backing up to an external HD.
All in all, I am satisfied with the product and recommend it.
Digital camera Review: A real POS Summary: 2 Stars
I have to say that I will NEVER buy a netgear readyNAS DUO ever ever again. For the last year, it has frozen, lost its shares, and now just blinks for DAYS. Tech support is useless - just look at the general comments from the user community - there is no effort or even help with the arcane and STUPID error codes for the various boxes.
Now, I'm stuck with a box that blinks 4 times for days ("flash error") - OK, so now what? You get 90 days of free support, then you are stuck.
The Radar app is crap - totally arcane on my mac - unless you are an IT guy, forget it.
Just move on - I went to the WD My Book 4TB for about the same $$$.
Its crap like this that makes me shy away from netgear for anything.
Digital camera Review: Beware of the ProSafe Rebate Summary: 4 Stars
Beware of the rebate. I need to ensure I was satisfied with the product because once I submitted the rebate I would not be able to return it.
At the top of the rebate form in bold letters it had a `submit by' date. In the fine print it said it must be submitted within 30 days of purchase. I was slightly past the 30 days so they declined the rebate.
I feel this was intentionally misleading by ProSafe rebates.
As far as the NAS Duo it rocks. I've had it several months and am very satisfied with it.
I purchased the 2X1TB. I read a lot of reviews with issues relating to the second drive not being compatible so I purchased it with the drives pre-installed.
I connected it to my network and all my computers (4) were able to see and access the drive immediately.
My needs are pretty simple. I'm not using any of the advanced options or software. I use it to share files between computers and store my music and pictures.
I have my iTunes set up with the NAS as the library. There's plenty of room to grow and I have the confidence of knowing that my files are Raid protected.
It makes a slight noise, but I have it in the same room with me and it's barely noticeable.
The boot-up time is a bit slow, but I don't see a need for it to boot-up quickly and once it's up the performance over my wireless has been very good.
I've had no problems with the product and it's been very handy for storing all my music and sharing between my computers.
Digital camera Review: Data loss; recursive MEDIA folder Summary: 1 Stars
I bought my ReadyNAS Duo 1 month ago. I wanted a product that will
1) protect my data
2) allow me to access it from my various devices within my home wireless network (laptop, PS3, mobile phone)
Less than 1 month after using the Netgear ReadyNAS, this is the consequence:
* I now have lost 400GB+ of data stored on Netgear ReadyNAS, including pictures and videos of my precious baby boy -- something which is now forever lost
* In that one month, I had to put up with a ReadyNAS that is very unstable and very often, i lost the connection to ReadyNAS in the midst of trying to access data
Other things that you should consider:
- ReadyNAS has a "media" folder, which recursively reproduces everything within itself, including all the content (I'm not sure if it actually occupies that same amount of disk space). I tried deleting it, but it keeps coming back, like Freddy Krueger. It is a mess to deal with. You can find countless consumer posts about this problem online. Unfortunately I didn't know till I've bought the ReadyNAS
- ReadyNAS makes loud whirring noises after a period of operation, and then I'll have to reboot it
- I called international IDD to get help from NetGear ReadyNAS tech support and their advise caused me to lose all my data (I was told, if I hold the RESET button for 5 secs, it will perform a normal reset. But I was warned that holding the RESET button for 30 secs will cause all data to be erased. I figured I have a 25-second buffer before data erasure occurs --- quite a safe margin, so I performed a reset over the phone with Netgear Tech Support's guidance; to cut the long story short, I realized I still couldn't access my drive, and after several calls to both local and international Netgear helplines, I finally was escalated to Level 2 support where a guy apologized and told me I've to seek help from a local data recovery center. I had to pay the cost of the data recovery myself. It was hinted that the previous Tech Support guy gave me wrong information --- data erasure happens after SIX seconds of holding the RESET button, not 30 seconds as I was told. I spent > 3 hours on IDD phone calls with Netgear tech support, plus additional time spent following their instructions which mostly didn't work for me, and in the end, I lost all my data)
I understand there are many other good reviews of this product, so consider carefully. Netgear has offered me a replacement product, but I'm not taking it
Digital camera Review: Disappointed with the noise Summary: 3 Stars
First time buyer of a NAS for home use (standard photo, video, music and file backup), and not very technical. I spent a lot of time researching the drives and settled on the ReadyNAS based on the recommendations, but I definitely feel that many of the positive ratings must have come from more technical/super users. First, I have to disagree with anyone who says this is a quiet drive. Based on our network configuration, it is placed next to my TV. It seems to be almost constantly running, even though I don't use it more than a few times a week. Definitely causes us to have to increase the TV volume to hear over it, and when the TV is off I can hear it in the kitchen 30 feet away. Maybe there is a setting that can be changed, or I'll have to set the auto power on/off, though that is not optimal. The basic setup is ok, but I'm still finding my way around doing many what I would consider normal and simple operations. The manual should focus on common use cases and explain each exactly what to do--I have found it especially hard as a novice to figure out how to access remotely. I do believe it's a solid drive though, I like the hot swap capability and apparent ability to add larger drives as they become available on the market. I would recommend this if you're not concerned about the noise and if you are schooled a bit in this area.
