Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 1 TB (1 x 1 TB) Desktop Network Attached Storage RND2110

Digital camera Review: It does its job......finally. Good product with lackluster warranty support
Summary: 4 Stars

I had this unit for less then 2 months when it too a dive. Would not boot up just make lots of fan noises. When I tried to call tech support for assistance I had reached (I believe) their call center in Salt Lake City? Anyway, I was told if I wanted assistance out of that location (US based) I would have had to pay for an upgraded extended warranty at the cost of around $150. I declined and was told they had to transfer my call to India. YAY! So after being transfered from level 1, level 2, level 2.6, all the way to the top, I finally reached a gentleman BACK in the states, however the call was so terribly degraded from being transfered all over the world and back again, the call dropped. He called me back after a short while and set up and RMA to ship it to them for a replacement. Replacement arrives and it boots, however, its clearly used, scratched with dust in the ports and the fan is ridiculously loud and will not shut off. Back through level 1,2,3 and up, and finally someone agrees to overnight me a replacement and I will ship the unit back to them.

In the end I have a functioning unit that works well. The product itself is good. I do not use the more advanced features such as remote access or the photo sharing, partly due to the fact that the features kinda stink. Remote access requires a software install on your mobile machine and the photo sharing is really nothing more then a website hosted on a local pc pointing to the NAS for pictures. I did not purchase the unit for these *bonus* features so Im not bummed about it. I do however use the built in Bittorrent client and recently installed the 3rd party Transmission torrent client and love it. Upload your torrent file and go to bed. No need to keep a machine on to complete your download. It's downloading stuff now as I type this!

I load it with movies and stream to my PS3 and PC. It's RAIDed so I store my pictures and MP3s on it and sleep somewhat comfortably knowing I have redundancy. I am very happy with my purchase but if I had to buy another, knowing a little more about them now, I may research some other brands/units first.

Digital camera Review: NAS seems fine, bundled NTI s/w worthless and waste of time
Summary: 2 Stars

I'll try to be short, but I'm steaming. The drive set right up and works well. But, the bundled NTI s/w is horrible. It worked for a few days then after that it kept giving error messages. I opened a case with NTI - no response. So I opened a case with Netgear - fast response, but:

NetGear tech support: first person needed to transfer me, second person transfered me - but back to the beginning. Third guy had a bad headset and was hard to understand. He disconnected me. So I called again and asked for level 2 as their email response to me offered if Level 1 couldn't help. I had to answer all the same questions for the third time - to get to Level 2 and answer a fourth time. This guys eventually give me the "secret s/w" update.
[...] has the same complaints.

But - it doesn't work for me. Why isn't the updated s/w posted at NTI or NetGear?

Over 90 minutes with tech support and hours of trouble shooting. I haven't decided if I'll keep the drive - I'm going to try some freeware backup s/w. If I have to buy new back up s/w I'll get a cheap USB external drive to use with it.

BTW NetGear, if you bundle s/w then you endorse it. It represents you. You can't just tell people you have no responsibility for it (like you told me on the phone, eventually, and you tell people on your boards, see link above).

Don't bundle the s/w if it isn't good - don't advertise the drive comes with backup s/w if it isn't up to the standards of your hardware.

Yes, I'm pissed at NetGear for their lack of testing, responsibility to customers, tech support, and openness on newer s/w that is supposed to fix a common issue.

Digital camera Review: Netgear ReadyNAS - Seems like a winner
Summary: 5 Stars

Setup for this was straight-forward and without issue. You simply hook it up and go through the setup wizard and you're done. I bought this to offload data from my machines local drives and also safeguard family photos.

I have the 1TB model and bought a second drive for the mirror. I had moved about 300gb to the single drive before I installed the second. You simply mount the drive on the slide-out frame with 4 screws and slide it back in. It instantly sets up the drive and begins syncing.

A bonus is all the additional services you can provide from this thing if you want. There seems to be good support through the ReadyNAS community website too.

Digital camera Review: Nice NAS option
Summary: 4 Stars

This Network Attached Storage unit was easy to install. I quickly upgraded it by adding a 2nd drive. It kicked in and automatically backed up the primary drive. Since I bought this unit to replace another brands NAS that failed, I went ahead and added a detached USB drive to create a 2nd backup for piece of mind. The software to backup to the drive was easy to implement and does not appear to consume the devices which need to backup up to it.

Digital camera Review: Nice to have
Summary: 4 Stars

Nice product easy setup and easy to use.
using crashplan to backup the raid drive also, so far so good
