Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 500 GB (1 x 500 GB) Network Attached Storage RND2150

Digital camera Review: Great network storage device
Summary: 5 Stars

I based my decision on purchasing this device primarily on the reviews from this site. As it turns out, it was the correct dicision. I am using it with two XP machines, and one Vista machine. Set up was not that difficult at all, and so far (about a week) it has performed beautifully. I also found out something that I should share... Do not use the same share name on the ReadyNAS as the user name on your computer, or you will get access denied errors. I found this out the hard way by searching the web. I called Netgear but they were of no assistance, and told me that it was a computer security problem. i hope this helps the next person who runs into this proble. Otherwise, this is a good product. I also like the quick and simple backup software that came with the unit.

Digital camera Review: Great price, easy to use
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall, I found my ReadyNAS easy to set-up and had it working fairly quickly, aside from copying data from the external hard drive it was replacing. The unit is very quiet and if it wasn't for the blue light on the front, I wouldn't even know it was on. We have it working with our Squeezebox Boom and TiVo, streaming music and photos flawlessly.

My one minor complaint is that there really are no instructions and support is typically handled via forums and a wiki on the product site. While the forums typically have valid answers to my questions, definitive how-to guides would be helpful for common tasks as searching the forum sometimes returns out-dated material.

Digital camera Review: Great so far after a month
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this a month ago. Setup was easy enough. Ordered a second drive, installed it and had a mirror shortly after. Copied my data, created shares and logins and we're on our way to server bliss. Moved my iTunes library, docs and pictures. The picture software and server to view pictures from the web is a little slow to upload. They should get something like Kodak easy share express upload to make it faster. I thought pictures were viewable from the internet on the device but you upload them to a server at Netgear like kodak. Otherwise great little box that gives a central storage place and redundancy.

Digital camera Review: Great!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I know that these days hard drives are getting smaller and smaller, so storage space is not really a question of whether one can accommodate one more thing near their workspace. This said my first thought was that the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo looked so large, not so in real life, this little thing can be put anywhere and it gives me the freedom to stockpile my favorite music, movies and games with no worries of running out of space. I am not some computer expert, just a simple home user that loves to play a lot of games like The Sims and I always find that speed gets slower and the space runs out if I only had my computer at home for hosing the games, with this device I can really enjoy, buy expansion packs and download to my hears desire.

The BitTorrent client was another nice plus, my bf found this very helpful and is really enjoying the benefits.

Digital camera Review: It Works - Survived A Real World Disk Failure
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this unit 2 years ago from Amazon. It came with a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 installed and I purchased a duplicate for the second bay. It has stayed powered up continuously for the past two years and completed light duty work as a file server in a small home network (5 machines, both PC and Mac). No complaints at all until a few days ago when it went off-line and unresponsive in the middle of a large file transfer (~250 GB) from the NAS to a machine on the network. Couldn't get it to power down so had to pull the plug. The most credible troubleshooting advice I found online was to check the drives first before other steps like a factory reset. I used a USB to SATA cable to check the drives and sure enough the drive in Bay 2 was toast (failed SMART Test for a read error even though the SMART Status read good). The NAS re-started just fine with the good drive in Bay 1 and Bay 2 empty. All the data was intact and readable. My only complaints are that it came with a Seagate drive that has a reputation for failing (lots of reviewers of the drive saw a lot less service than my 2 years), and the way that it handled the disk failure wasn't graceful. I fully acknowledge that I may not have had the unit configured optimally to handle the disk failure (I'd not upgraded the firmware or set any advanced configurations--I just plugged it in and started copying files and since it always worked I never worried about it). I still have the troubleshooting to do in order to figure out what the unit could have done and should have done when the disk failed. I didn't lose any data, but wonder if it could have been worse if it had happened during a write instead of a read.

Update: Reviewing the logs I see that the NAS started reporting disk errors over 6 weeks prior to the disk failing. If I had configured the unit to send me alerts, I would have gotten an email or a text and would have had an easier time troubleshooting. During all the swapping of disks, I had one disk tray release button freeze and stick hard. It was easy to find a very helpful thread on this in the ReadyNAS Forum. While it appears that it is a design flaw, and there is a re-disign completed, with a little fiddling and some silicone grease I was able to fix mine with no problems.
