Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR WPN824NA Wireless Mimo RouterDigital camera Review: As Good as Wireless Routers Get Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this router to replace an older Netgear WGR614 a/b/g router and I couldn't be more pleased. It was extremely simple to replace my old router using the wizard (even with encryption) and took less than 5 minutes. Even though the router isn't draft n, I read articles on CNet that it seems to outperform draft n routers in most respects, so why bother with a new standard? Its a bit bigger than old router, but not having antennas is awesome and other manufacturers should be ashamed of having so many antennas on their boxes that they look like short wave radios. Do they REALLY expect me to fiddle around with moving antennas for best reception? Yeah, right, keep dreaming, guys. I also love the fact that Netgear doesn't install any software on my computer and is controlled through firmware on the router itself, but I don't know if other brands are like this, too.
I didn't buy the special matching Netgear RangeMax cards for my laptop or Playstation 3, but the wireless range with "normal" g cards is still notably superior than old g router, they claim 50% better and I believe it. (Playstation had trouble connecting to old router signal, but is fine now.) The best part perhaps, though is a significantly faster connection with WIRED connection to my desktop through this router, too, though I don't know why this should be.
As far as flashing lights go, yeah, they would be annoying if in you field of vision by my v2 box has a button the back to turn them off. (But I gotta admit, I leave them on sometimes...)
Installing wireless routers can sometimes be tricky, so the average ratings are relatively low for wireless routers, but I had no problems. It costs about $40 more than normal g routers, but worth it in my opinion.
Digital camera Review: At Last! Wireless internet throughout the apartment!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
We live in NYC in an apartment building constructed in 1898. It has thick walls, and many of them, and we have NEVER been able to receive a signal in the living room until now. I am happily typing this on my MacBook, dirty martini in hand, thrilled beyond words to be able to use my laptop anywhere in the house. Thanks to the reviewers who talked about getting a signal at the far end of the backyard, or installing the router in the distant reaches of the attic and getting coverage throughout the house, I decided to take a chance on the cute little router with the flashing blue lights. Installation was pretty much idiot-proof, (and as an idiot with this type of thing I know what I'm talking about), and quick. My children and I are delighted with the speed of this thing...we had been using an Apple Airport Express, and much as I hate to say anything even remotely negative about an Apple product, it just didn't cut it. I recommend this whith no reservations.
Digital camera Review: Avoid this router and be careful with any other Netgear products Summary: 1 Stars
This router is defective -- according to Netgear -- but unless you figure it out before your 1 year warranty expires they will not replace it and they have no intention of fixing it.
I purchased this router over a year ago. At first, I was satisfied with its performance but after a while I noticed that the "random" network failures (or "disconnects") had a pattern to them. I figured out how to recreate the error consistently by using an ssh shell (like "telnet" if you aren't familiar) and scrolling over a large amount of text. (More recently, I have noticed that other conditions can cause failures, such as downloading a lot of small files at once -- such as the case when reading a blog or a myspace profile). These conditions cause failures due to regular usage and the only way to resume usage of the product is to physically walk over and unplug it and then plug it in again (to reboot it).
Once I figured it out that the defect wasn't just my usage or something about my setup, I contacted Netgear support. After discussing it with a tech support representative he confirmed that the router was defective, that Netgear had no intention of fixing their defective product, and that because I was past the 1-year warranty period that they could not replace my product or provide any further assistance.
I have purchased Netgear routers, bridges, and switches at work and at home for over 6 years. Considering this experience, I will avoid their products in the future.
Digital camera Review: Awesome Product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Net Gear WPN824 wireless router to replace my D-Link di624 wireless router. Setup was fast and easy with very nice menus. I had it up and going within 5 minutes! The flashing blue lights on the top do get old after a while, but it now is packaged with a black plastic circle piece to stick over the blue flashing lights. The coverage and signal strength is awesome from any place within my home, even outside on our deck. It has 5 wired rj45 ports and does support 128 bit encryption. One thing to remember is to release then renew the IP addresses on any wireless devices you had on a previously existing wireless network. I am in complete awe at the wireless strength and am very happy with my Net Gear purchase!
