Digital camera reviews of NETGEAR WPN824NA Wireless Mimo Router

Digital camera Review: Beware when upgrading
Summary: 1 Stars

Wireless router technology is in extreme flux. Understandably, reviews vary considerably. The 824 price has fallen from $80 to $30 in a week. (I returned mine, and resumed using an earlier model.)

Here are some facts learned the hard way. RangeMax et al. utilize 802.11n, i.e., "draft n" technology with rates of 108Mbps--and more recently at 300Mbps. Rarely mentioned is the need to have computer network adaptors consistent with the router. This invariably means additional hardware costs, as firmware upgrades my not suffice. It gets worse. The PowerBook G4, for example, has a built in 54Mbps, 802.11g adaptor that cannot be upgraded to draft n.

Also, given a wireless network of computerS and an 802.11n router, the overall network transfer rate will fall to the lowest common denominator among the various network adaptors. That is, the presence of a 802.11b or g will reduce the network rate to the slowest speed.

Digital camera Review: Blinking Blue lights
Summary: 5 Stars

There is a simple way to fix the blinking blue lights. There should be a white button on the back of the device when the switch is on the lights blink. When it is up or off they don't.

Digital camera Review: Buy something else.
Summary: 2 Stars

I have owned this item for a little over 4 months now, and have had nothing but trouble with it. I run 2 wired desktops, 1 wireless desktop, a Voip phone, a laptop, and an Ipaq all under one roof. This thing is a nightmare. It wouldn't let the wireless desktop on except under special occasions like a full moon , and when it did allow access, it would dump EVERYTHING after 10 minutes. I have followed all the install procedures to the "t", rebooted, reinstalled, and still have problems. If you want a disco light coaster, this is your unit. If you want a good router, get something else.

Digital camera Review: Customer Service in India Beware
Summary: 3 Stars

The product is great once it's hooked up but it took me making a call to India for it to work. The Router should have set itself up but for some reason there was a DNS error and it couldn't so I had to call customer support which was routed to India. I never thought it actually existed but I actually talking to a lady with a heavy Indian accent and it was the worst experience ever, but at least we had the patience to work it out and I finally got it set up. The speed is just as fast as my cable connection without the added devices such as those adapters or whatever. I'm not big on computers but this wireless internet in my house is great. The security in it is overrated, although you have to put in a password to access the network. For exactly 79.99 through Amazon it was a steal.

Digital camera Review: Defective Router
Summary: 1 Stars

I thought the whirling blue lights were superfluous, but way cool. Clearly you wouldn't want them shining in your eyes while you were trying to sleep. Netgear provides a cap to go over the lights if you don't like them.

I tried using the setup wizard to no avail, so I called customer support.

The Indian accent is very different from the American accent. Also the phone connection was not very clear/loud. This makes it hard for an American to understand what is being said. This is compounded if the other end doesn't speak very slowly.

I made a total of 3 phone calls. The first phone claimed the problem was my DSL modem. However, when I hooked up my old Netgear 624 router, internet access worked as well as before.

The 2nd phone call resulted in an internet connection for the computer which was hard wired to the LAN port. After the end of my 2nd phone call, however, I realized that the wireless computers still received no signal.

I made a third phone call. The third phone made the determination that the router was defective. I already own a Netgear 624 router. My original Netgear 624 router purchase was also defective. I had to return that 624 router to a service center for replacement. I found it odd that both routers were defective after purchase. I have concluded that the quality of Netgear products is very poor.

The performance of the Netgear 624 router has never been good. I have been looking for a replacement router for a year. I was reluctant to purchase more Netgear products because of past experience. However, since I already had Netgear PCI adaptor cards, I thought I should try the Netgear 824 router.

Everyone is telling me that Linksys has a better product with a better range. They also have a one year customer support, rather than Netgear's 90 days. Their router sells for less too!
