Digital camera reviews of NIKE + IPOD SENSOR-USADigital camera Review: Died after 2 hours Summary: 2 Stars
I received my purchase promptly. Inserted the sensor in my shoe and everything worked great - until the next day when I couldn't get my ipod to recognize the sensor.
Digital camera Review: Does what it says...usually Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great little device - when it works.
My wife got one first, and being of the competitive sort, I wanted to track my runs too. So I bought one as well. Hers worked fine, but my first one wouldn't sync with my iPod, no matter what I tried. Checked Google and learned that these are shipped 'on' which means mine was probably tracking it's "runs" through shipping and while stored in a warehouse for who-knows-how-long. Luckily, Amazon has an easy return policy, and a week or so later a new one was on my doorstep. The second one worked just fine, so we're at a 66.6% success rate within our family. Outstanding if you're a baseball player, but not so great for an electronics manufacturer.
If you look in the manual, there is a small button on the underside of the sensor that you can press with an unfolded paperclip. Holding that down for 3 seconds will put the sensor to "sleep" (another 3-second press will awaken it), which should conserve batteries when not in use. Otherwise, if you leave it in the same shoes you wear throughout the day, the battery (which others have noted, is not replacable) will die quickly.
The Nike+ software is good, but not great. Being a closed-source app from a major company, I wouldn't expect any stellar new features. If you have an iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or anything else with a built in GPS, and regularly run outside, I'd recommend skipping this little guy and using one of the dozens of GPS-enabled run tracking apps out there. If you usually run on a track, treadmill, or such, or don't have a GPS enabled device, then this little jelly bean will do a decent enough job of tracking your statistics, though I'd be tempted to just note my stats on paper and transfer them to a spreadsheet later. You'll be able to do a lot more analytics on the data this way, though you'll miss out on the community aspect of the Nike+ website.
Digital camera Review: Doesn't work with 1st gen iPod Touch Summary: 2 Stars
I'm a little mad about this. I bought this thinking it would work fine with my 1st generation iPod touch... but it doesn't. 2nd gen or higher only. It doesn't state this anywhere in the technical details. Just BEWARE if you are planing on using it for an older (1st gen) iPod. I'm waiting to hear back from apple if I could use a receiver from the nano kit with my touch and get the same effect, but I am not hopeful.
Digital camera Review: Don't waste your money Summary: 2 Stars
Don't shell out the $20 for this sensor! First, it's not very accurate on its own. You'll need a known distance like a track to calibrate it. Second, you have to calibrate it both walking and running. Even with it calibrated for running I saw variences of nearly 0.5 miles over a 6 mile course due to me varying my speed as I ran. Third, with this sensor you're tied to your running shoes. The sensor gets installed under the insole of your sneaker, but what happens if I want to track time, distance and speed on a ruck march? Can't put the sensor in my combat boots. Last, Nike has an app on iTunes called Nike+GPS. It's $1.99, far more accurate, and you can use it without using your running shoes. Save your money!

It's now April 2010 and for over 6 months now, [...] has yet to get this ish together. The site totally sucks. If you're looking to upload your runs and share with friends and all that greatness that Nike makes is seem to be, then don't waste your time. You're not able to search for your friends, sync your email contacts, you get errors when syncing in with facebook and twitter. It syncs fine from your ipod/iphone to itunes but once it gets sent to [...] is when you get screwed. I've been searching through all the threads and forums and they say they're working on it but over 6 months? For now, I would just skip buying this sensor and just download an app. Don't believe the hype, there is no friendly nike online running community. Seems like everyone is getting these issues.
