Digital camera Review: Excellent Laptop Cooler

This is a fantastic cooler. I bought it to keep my 4 year old Inspiron 8600 cool, since it mostly works as my temporary HTPC. It used to get very hot and slow down whenever I watched online flash videos or played games with high graphics. This cooler does a great job of keeping it cool even during the most intense graphics operations. The computer no longer slows down and flash videos (from hulu.com) look great and playback is smooth.
The construction is solid and it's really nice and heavy. It's built in USB hub gave me some trouble initially during the setup and I had to rewire some of my peripherals to prevent windows from crashing just because that USB hub was connected to the laptop. It's all great now.
It's also surprisingly quiet (you have to literally sit within 3 feet of the cooler to be able to listen to the hum generated by those 3 120mm fans running at max speed). Perfect to extend the life of your old aging laptop which gets hot frequently and slows down.

I looked at a dozen or more laptop/notebook coolers before settling on the NZXT. Admittedly, it is more expensive than most other coolers. However, it truly does the job.
Pros:
The three fans are whisper quiet
My Dell D800 is actually cool to the touch rather than hot, as it had been
The unit is powered by a USB port
It has 5 USB ports - one connects to a laptop port leaving 4 available
The top of the cooler is large enough to handle big screen laptops
The angle of the cooler puts the laptop at a much more comfortable level
The design and black color look great
The unit is very sturdy
It folds for transportation but I leave mine on my desk
Cons:
The price
The power and USB connections use a total of two ports (so net gain is 2)
I highly recommend the NZXT if you are serious about keeping your laptop cool.

Provided with: 1 USB to DC cable, 1 USB to USB cable, one wall-outlet DC adaptor
Pros:
* Large enough to accommodate 17' or 18.4" laptops/notebooks
* Generous amounts of rubber padding both above and below the unit, so it doesn't skid on the table and the computer doesn't skid on the unit (used to be a problem with my previous laptop cooler/base). STABLE and SOLID.
* Good angle for VERY comfortable typing (using it as I type this review)
* FOUR USB connectors
* Nice folding design, fits easily into a laptop/notebook backpack
* Nice big fans, very quiet even at top speed
* Variable speed fans, speed easily controlled with wheel on right side
* Optional wall-outlet DC adaptor so you won't tie up a second USB port on your notebook.
Cons:
* The provided cables might be a tad too short, depending on where the USB port(s) are located on your notebook
* IF YOU DON'T USE the provided AC adapter, this REQUIRES TWO USB PORTS on your laptop -- this is minor, since the unit provides you with FOUR fully functional USB ports. OR, you can use the wall-outlet AC adapter.
* Might be a tad heavy, but that's nitpicking
There are two cables provided:
* USB to DC: This goes from one of the USB ports on your laptop, to the DC connector on the base, and does nothing but provide power to the base
* USB to USB: This goes from another USB port on your laptop, to a FIFTH USB connector on the base to provide a USB data link to the other four USB ports on the base. You can't confuse this fifth one with the others, since it's located on the other side of the DC connector (from right to left there are 4 USB ports, one DC port, and the fifth USB port for data)
About portability: Bear in mind, this base is large because it's designed for large notebooks (17" or above), so unless your notebook bag is one of those slim satchels, it stands to reason that this base, when folded, should fit nicely in your bag. I use a notebok backpack, no problem fitting this base (folded) in it. Explaining it to airport security of course, is a different matter.
As with all cooling/fan bases, unless you're using AC on your notebook (or, in this case, on the cooling/fan base), your battery will drain fairly quickly.
Great product, definitely recommended to anyone who spends long periods of time working with a notebook in the same place with available wall-outlets.

IF you are going to use this on a desk, it is probably the BEST cooler you can buy. You can use your laptop for hours and hours and it does not heat up in the slightest. However, it is way too heavy and bulky, and the corners are too sharp to use it on your lap.
