Digital camera reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: Can't find the Michelin Star LaToque restaurant in Napa, but other than that...
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this item due to the ever lowering price point and life time traffic alerts. And yes it does look cool! No wall charger in the box like Amazon claims, but their customer service rep promised to send me one. We'll see about that (so far Amazon has been great to deal with).

The Navigon 5100 has the best bang for the buck without all the foo foo stuff like fm radio, MP3 etc., I want it to get me to point B from A. So far it does that pretty well. Couldn't find La Toque restaurant in Rutherford, Napa, California and that was a disappointment. Fortunately 411 and La Toque's informative hostess got me to where I wanted to go. Every other Zagat rated restaurant was found in it's POI look up. All in all the Navigon 5100 will find a cozy place under the tree for me.

Digital camera Review: Capable GPS as long as you're aware of its limits
Summary: 4 Stars

After much studying of features among the top tier of GPS providers, including Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan, I finally decided on the Navigon 5100. I've used a Garmin when I rent cars, and while they have a great POI database, they don't include free lifetime traffic updates like the Navigon does. Since that was one of the main points of my purchase (I live in St. Louis where they've closed one of the Interstates for two years), I didn't want to shell out more money for a traffic service. Nor did I feel like I wanted to buy one of the much more expensive units that could interface with my cell phone, etc. I supplemented the unit with software that allows you to add your own POI databases to the unit, and now I have something quite workable and more flexible. The preview of more complicated interchanges is nice, and I like how it warns you a mile ahead of your turn so you can start changing lanes early...the Garmin's I regularlly rent don't do this. I'd buy again, and have been happy with it for what I paid.

Digital camera Review: Close enough to perfect given its price
Summary: 5 Stars

Having just purchased this for less than $300, and looking forward to a $50 rebate, the net cost of less than $250 makes this hands down the best value on the GPS market today. Though not flawless, the 5100 has more high end features than any other GPS in its price range.

Best features:

1) Text to speech (it can read street names) - not as smooth as the feature's execution by Garmin, but I couldn't find another GPS at $250 with the feature.
2) Free traffic reporting - has already saved me time driving around NYC.
3) Reality view - not real-life, but enough to make complex interchanges easier to navigate.

The satellite acquisition times are reasonable (under 3 minutes), and the volume plenty loud. Routing is handled well, and reroutes are quick and smooth.

Overall, I'd buy this again.

Digital camera Review: Credible value
Summary: 4 Stars

Out of the box traffic is great and "reality" feature is new to me and good as is lane information approaching intersections. I returned a low end Garmin to get the additional features and am pleased I did for the price difference. The use of color (too much grey, grey, grey) is frankly a bit disappointing vs competitors but the screen is easy to read and directions based on a month of use are accurate. Amount of on board data - street names, POI etc is good. Not a buy/ no buy criterion but windshield mount is easy to use and stylish in comparion with others. Would not trade it (yet).

Digital camera Review: D. Aikens
Summary: 4 Stars

Product looks really nice, and serves it's basic purpose of getting you from A to B. However, Navigon still has a ways to go to compete with Garmin and Magellan GPS products. Overall, the product is great for it's value. Several of my cons with the Navigon 5100 is the power button, it has be pressed for about 8-10 seconds before it will turn on/off. Another issue I have is that the POI's (gas stations) do not display the gas prices. Other than, that this product is very reliable and looks really slick in the window.
