I don't know what the deal was with the person that said he scanned 40 receipts in 8 hours; he must need a new PC or something. I scanned about 20 receipts in about half an hour or less and this includes filing everything. It doesn't automatically file, but it does automatically recognize vendors and what kind of category that should be placed in. It sometimes makes mistakes on finding the correct total cost of purchases on a receipt. I've had issues with it scanning to PDF; a reboot of my PC usually fixes it. The Search feature is sweet; very easy to find past receipts! I tried backing up using the built-in backup feature, and the software froze up; haven't tried it again since. I paid for the Ver. 3 software package to save some money and they sent me Ver. 4 for the same price and when I installed it, gave me the option to upgrade to the latest. It comes with a stand to stand it up vertical that takes up less desk space and will even scan the receipts that way. It also comes with a wall mount which I haven't tried.
The business card scanner feature it kinda cool too. It recognizes the address and puts everything in the correct fields for easy searching later.
It's a wonderful product and I have recently recommended it to a family member. I only gave it 4 stars because of all the minor problems I had, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

This software is a nice idea, scanning & OCR'ing your receipts, business cards & documents. But it offers not even a tiny bit of security, such as a password. It also took me three hours on the phone with Neat Receipts staff to get it installed.
This software uses a SQL server database to store the data which means the data is on your C drive, regardless what drive you install the software on and cannot be moved to another drive. (Unless you are a SQL wizard & can move the database yourself.) That means anyone you let use your computer can get into this program. It also means unless your C drive is encrypted (IE Truecrypt), anyone who steals your computer will have access to the information in the database. As of this writing (7/22/08), per the message board on their website, the issue of security is not something the Neat Receipts staff addresses. Several users have repeatedly brought the issue of security to their attention over the past several months. The Neat Receipts response is either ("yes, that's a concern") or ignoring the posts.
So if security is something you're not concerned with, you should be. If it is something you're concerned with, I'd suggest other scanning software (IE Paperport) that allow you to store your electronic documents on encrypted drives or folders (IE Axcrypt).

Neat Receipts is a useful product if you have a need for portable scanning of receipts and don't mind the scanner jams and software that does not record receipts properly. There is a new version of software, version 4, being sold and billed by Neat Receipts but they do not have a product to download or ship so I have to wonder about their business ethics and products overall. I would have liked to review it but after paying for it, and waiting to be able to download it, then hunting on an low grade website for a link to download I found that a download product is "Backordered" and there is no adequate way to conveniently contact them.
Additionally, the product does not work with 64 bit processors but that information isn't available unless you call and ask, or install it and watch it fail.
