Digital camera reviews of Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 1 TB (1 x 1 TB) Desktop Network Attached Storage RND2110Digital camera Review: Very easy, reliable storage but not Lightroom friendly Summary: 4 StarsI have been using the Netgear ReadyNAS Duo for several months now and I have been really impressed. As advertised, the drive is really quite small and very quiet. I often connect the drive directly to my computer rather than over a network. I originally bought a cross-over cable for this application, but it turned out that the drive did not need it and a regular Ethernet cable is sufficient. When I first started, I did have a bit of trouble getting my computer to recognize the drive. After looking at the Netgear website, I found that there were some problems with the current version of the drive's software. I just needed to download the prior version and everything was a snap after that.
One thing to be aware of is that you can only use one of the preapproved drives from the list found on the Netgear ReadyNAS website. There are only a few drives on the list over 1 TB. There is a forum on the Netgear ReadyNAS website about the use of drives that are not on the approved list. However, you do so at your own risk. The users manual for the ReadyNAS Duo states that they do not have to give you support if you run into problems due to using drives which are not on the preapproved list.
One of the reasons why I highly recommend this drive is reliability. I put two Seagate 1 TB drives into the ReadyNAS Duo and proceeded to put all of my thousands of photographs onto the drives. Within a week, I began getting warnings from the ReadyNAS Duo that one of my hard drives was already having problems and should be replaced immediately because it would fail. I find a great deal of comfort knowing that the ReadyNAS Duo will alert me to drive problems.
I do have some gripes, however. The first is that even when I am using a 1000 Ethernet connection I don't achieve the transfer speeds that I expected.
The other is the built in backup software. As people warn on the ReadyNAS Duo website, using RAID is not going to protect your data if there is a fire or the ReadyNAS Duo is stolen. Therefore, I also have an external USB connected drive which I keep offsite. The USB dirve can plug directly into the ReadyNAS Duo for scheduled backups. This seemed like a great feature until I tried to use it. The backup of my 1 TB drive which was only 1/4 full took over 24 hours and I finally just stopped the process. It was faster to just use a backup software on my computer and use it to transfer data.
One other thing to think about if you are a photographer who uses Adobe Lightroom is that Lightroom does not allow you to put catalogs on a network drive. This is an issue with how Lightroom has to pull previews from the catalog folders on the network drive and slow networks are not fast enough to support this. If you want to keep your catalogs on a drive, you may want to consider a different enclosure that supports USB or Firewire.
Overall, despite the problems, I am really pleased with the drive. I would highly recommend it due to its size, quiet operation and most of all its reliability.
