Digital camera reviews of Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G RouterDigital camera Review: Avoid at all costs!! Summary: 1 Stars
You get what you pay for. Password protection and encryption process is a convoluted mess. Save yourself the trouble. Pay the extra and buy a Linksys or Apple router. Will never buy a Linksys product again.
Digital camera Review: Avoid this terrible router Summary: 1 Stars
In the 18 or so months I've had this router, it has given me nothing but trouble. Almost every week it will simply freeze and stop working, requiring a reset. However, there is no power switch on the unit, so you have to unplug the AC adapter every time you need to turn it off or reset it. Very inconsiderate and totally lame.
Port forwarding rules often simply disappear from their list, preventing you from ever editing or deleting them, but continue to be in effect, causing port conflict errors later on. Sometimes they disappear as soon as you create them. Worse, Netgear refuses to acknowledge this problem any further than recommending a hard reset to factory defaults, which only delays the problem rather than fixing it. Even if you can get the settings to stick, the forwarded ports often don't work at all. UPnP is the only feature on this thing that actually works. This is the last Netgear product I will ever own.
Don't buy this router because it looks like a bargain. There's a reason it's cheap: it's complete garbage. Save your money and put it toward something better.
Digital camera Review: Avoid! Summary: 1 Stars
I accidentally bought a WGR614v9 today as a replacement for a broken wireless router and tried to configure it... this is the story:
1) For the remote access, I was unable to set port 444 as before. For some non-existent reason Netgear disallows ports below 1024...?!
2) I could *not* assign the port forwardings as needed (Port 8010 to 192.168.1.10:80 and Port 8011 to 192.168.1.11:80, for example, because Netgear doesn't allow the specification of an *internal port*)...
3) I tried to save/download the configuration to a file, this failed repeatedly (0% download progress) until reboot of the device.
4) The firmware update mechanism repeatedly confirmed, that there's no newer firmware available. When I checked the website manually, I found V1.2.30_41.0.44 and downloaded it.
5) The firmware upgrade hung (WIRED connection only!). After 15 minutes or so I finally had to unpower the device, and it was DEAD.
With the help of this forum, I was able to get the device back by TFTP-ing the firmware by command line... at least that worked!
My search for an alternative firmware like Tomato wasn't successful, because the ingenious product designers removed 2 of the 4 megabyte RAM that is necessary for these firmwares...
I have to return this product to the store tomorrow and get a better brand...
Digital camera Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great router. Easy to set up-- I was up and running within minutes, and the speed and range are excellent. I then set up the 128-bit encryption and turned off SSID broadcast to secure and lock down my wireless connection, and it is working great! (My one comment here is that there were no instructions on setting up encryption-- it was easy enough to figure out but I think it is a common thing to do and should be included in the quickstart guide). The range is great (though I do live in an apartment so that is to be expected) but I get 100% signal no matter which room I am in. It also looks really slick in silver and having it on its side in the supplied stand. Along with the rebates, this is an excellent wireless-G solution at a great price. (I've heard there have been some problems with getting back the rebate checks. I sent mine in last week, will update in a few weeks when I hopefully have those in hand.)
Digital camera Review: Awful wireless stability Summary: 1 Stars
I have been using this router for about 8 months in a tiny studio apartment for networking 2 desktops and 2 laptops. Overall, I have come to hate the router.
Pro: it looks pretty and the wired ports work great!
Con: The wireless functionality of this router is good when it works, but frequently (I would say 70%?) of the time, devices are unable to connect wirelessly to the router. The network always remains visible, but the problem lies in connecting to it. When it works the other 30% of the time, there is no rhyme or reason as to why it works. We've never changed any settings, reboots dont seem to have any affect. I have not considered turning off encryption; if this is causing the router to become unstable then I would consider the wireless piece to be worthless because I don't want other people to use my internet connection. I have heard some reports of the router overheating and people having success with adding heatsinks...but if that's the solution to my problem then I will simply buy a different router that I don't need to re-engineer.
