I tried a similar product from Radio Shack. It was advertised to work in a similar capacity - however, it ended up that it would work only if I stood within 4 feet of the TV - isn't that great!
Then I saw reviews of this product and ordered it - man what a difference. I had it working in less than 5 minutes of opening the package and it works flawlessly. I have all my equipment sitting in a closed pantry behind the TV and the signal is strong enough. The remote works throughout our family room regardless of where you are pointing.
I just ordered another extender for my bedroom. I don't write reviews often - I am really impressed with this product.

Set the base up, put the little battery in the remote, does exactly what it says. I use it with my Tivo remote, and the only problem is if I'm in the same room as the Tivo, it seems to work less reliably, I think because its confused by two signals, one from the remote and one from the extender. Remote actually works best if you aim it away from the Tivo when you are in the same room. Other than that absolutely shocking how well it works.

The biggest thing that made all the difference for my application was that the remote extender (UFO looking device) needed to be located a couple feet away from the device I was intending to control.
I have my cable box in a closet behind my TV. Originally I had the UFO device on the same shelf as the cable box (very similar to the video shown in another review). Because my shelf is small and compact the UFO device was too close to the cable box. As soon as I pulled the UFO device further away, it has been working perfectly ever since.

This product is great if you want to use your original remote and don't keep your cable box, DVD player, or whatever out in the open. There is really no other product that lets you do this. If you use a universal remote, it will still let you hide your electronics. There are several great universal remotes that work by RF and will control electronics in cabinets but this Next Generation product is a good fairly inexpensive solution.
For me I don't want to give up my Tivo peanut remote. I also have a second transmitter inside my DVD player remote. It's been well over a year of use with few problems. I've found the company to be friendly and accessible when I called several times with questions.
Negatives:
Will only work with devices that take AA or AAA batteries, no rechargeables.
Still won't work with some devices but I haven't had this experience.
Functionality is sensitive to the location of the receiver which is small and gets pushed around accidently and it needs to be near the front of the cabinet.
Battery life is about a month with frequent use. The transmitter holds and charges an extra battery so there is always one handy. The negative is that performance slowly degrades as the battery dies and I'm not quite sure if I need to reposition the receiver or change the battery. As the battery dies, it becomes more important that the receiver be optimally located.
