Digital camera reviews of Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR Nikkor Wide-Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLR CamerasDigital camera Review: Painfully Expensive but Amazing Lens. Wide angle is fantastic. I LOVE it!! Summary: 4 Stars
You lose something on the long end, but the wide angle of 16mm is so incredibly useful. I compare this to my older tamron 18-200 and I only barely miss the long end (85-200). The picture quality is much much better head to head. It is painfully and unnecessarily expensive but...what the hell. I am saving on film.
4 stars because of the cost.

Digital camera Review: Perfect Family Vacation Lens Summary: 5 Stars
This is the perfect lens for family vacation photography. After reading the positive reviews, I purchased the Nikkor 16-85mm and rushed the shipment to ensure it was available for my just-completed family vacation to Southwest Colorado and Monument Valley, Utah.
Mounted on a Nikon D-80, the product was the perfect tool for family photography, allowing close imaging with spectacular backdrops. I also carried a Nikkor AF-S 18-200, but found no reason to switch from the 16-85 to the 18-200.
I wish to thank those who took the time to provide reviews on this product. Your advice and candid comments were very helpful.
An excellent lens!
Digital camera Review: Perfect Walkaround Summary: 5 Stars
This choice was the most bang for the buck for me.
No, it's not a 2.8. Typically, I don't care. Chips have advanced sufficiently to make ISO 800+ noise almost a nonissue. Even if it is an issue, software such as Noise Ninja solves that. Good lord, there's even VR now. How easy do you want it?
No, it's not an all-in-one 200mm zoom. Ask yourself how often you use that kind of focal length and if the extra weight is worth it. Often, too, there's only so much you can do about distortion when you try to pack, say, 18-200mm into one package.
(My other lens is the 70-300mm/4.5 VR - same 67mm filter thread - I typically use for aviation/marine shots. I don't mind leaving it - and the weight - out of the kit if I simply won't need it).
For real estate, particularly interiors, that little bit of extra field at 16mm is something I use constantly. If lens distortion is a concern, then learn to use the distortion correction tool in Photoshop.
For event/photojournalism, the wider zoom/closeup is pretty normal for my style. At the other end, I was concerned I wouldn't get enough zoom at 85mm. Usually, however, it's more than enough. If not, obviously I need to get closer to my subject.
As with any lens choice, it depends on what you need, not what someone tells you that you need. I'm not a Ken Rockwell fan. If you're clear on your needs vs. your wants, patiently go through your checklist and do your homework, you'll likely get a lens that's perfect for you.
Digital camera Review: Perfect lens but costly and DX Summary: 5 Stars
Perfect lens but costly and DX. Very very sharp. good wide and good size. all around lens.
Digital camera Review: Perfect lens for advanced amateurs Summary: 5 Stars
This nikon len is a good choice to replace a kit lens in DX cameras. After 6 years with the 18-70 kit lens of my old Nikon D70, I got this lens in order to complement the Nikon 70-300 VR. The Nikon 16-85 delivers quality, autofocus speed, VR and great focal range for everyday photography. Other lens I own: Sigma 10-20, Nikons: 16 mm 2.8 fisheye, 20 mm 2.8, 50 mm 1.8, 105 2.8 micro, 300 f4, 24-120, 24-85 2.8-4. The Nikon 16-85 enriched my lens collection in a perfect way.
