Digital camera reviews of Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR Nikkor Wide-Angle Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLR CamerasDigital camera Review: It's my Go-To lens! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm the kind of photographer that knows a little about a lot, but definitely not an expert. So, I'll do my best to give my take on this lens. BTW... I currently shoot with a D5000. I've owned this lens for about 6 months. I started with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses.
My photos range from architecture to landscape to chasing my kid around the back yard. The 18-55 kit lens just didn't have enough range to be practical. The 18-200mm looked very interesting until I read about the problems with CA, distortion and sharpness. I don't mean to take anything away from the 18-200. In order to design a lens with that kind of range, there are some tradeoffs that have to be made. This is where the 16-85mm lens came in. (In a 35mm world the lens actually covers a range of 24mm to about 125mm on a DX camera.)
The 16-85mm doesn't have the problems of the 18-200mm. It's sharp throughout the range and has very little distortion. The VR works really well. It focuses quickly and accurately. It has that extra 2 mm at the wide end for photos of architecture & landscapes and enough reach to cover a reasonable variety of photographic opportunities. It even works well as a macro lens. I'm uploading a shot of an Imperial Moth Caterpillar shot on my deck at close range and 85mm. The photo will give you an idea of how good the bokeh is too.
All things considered, it is a really wonderful lens and well worth the price. I do wish Nikon had added a little extra reach beyond the 85mm. However, it is the only standard zoom Nikon has that goes all the way down to 16mm. Those extra 2mm at the wide end are far more important than a little extra reach. There is no one perfect lens that will cover everything. Being able to use this lens for wide angle to mid range zoom means I can leave my 12-24mm lens at home most days. Buying this lens is a decision I'm glad I made.
Highly recommended!
Digital camera Review: LOVE IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this lens a few months ago. It has not been taken off my camera (other than cleaning) since. It takes great pictures and is the perfect range for my photography.
Digital camera Review: NIKON LENS Summary: 5 Stars
I AM A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT AND BOUGHT THIS LENS FOR MY D-80. IT IS JUST WHAT I NEED TO COMPLETE ALL OF MY ASSIGNMENTS AS IT HAS A VERY GOOD RANGE AND IS NOT CUMBERSOME OR TOO HEAVY. I WILL CONTINUE TO USE THIS LENS FOR YEARS TO COME ON A DAILY BASIS.
Digital camera Review: Nikkor 16-85mm DX VR Summary: 4 Stars
I have had this lens for about a year now. I sometimes use it on my D40, D80, or the D300s.
It is really a pretty nice lens, but when I use this lens I just don't seem to get the rock hard sharp clarity the one expects from a Nikon lens.
Digital camera Review: Nikkor 16-85mm Zoom with VR Summary: 5 Stars
I recently returned from a guided tour of the Rockies and had a chance to try this newly acquired lens out under varying conditions. It performed very well and any problems were due to my not understanding some of the features. It is avery advanced piece of equipment and easy to transition from older Nikkor lenses. Besides the focal length, which proved ideal for images of close ups of flowers as well as distant shops of an impressive landscape, I was curious as to how well the VR, vibration reduction feature worked and was surprised as how well it functioned. Even quick snapshots out a bus window were sharp. For me, this is an ideal lens for travel as I never felt the need to use my Nikkor 70-300 mm lens. I had some trouble using the M/A, M switch and am not sure why both settings are necessary. Otherwise I am very happy with the lens which I coupled to a Nikon D-90, also a very nice piece of equipment.
