I see a lot of "reviews" here that are complaining about how Amazon is treating their customers with respect to this item.
I placed my order back in June, and last Friday my order was canceled due to the projected availability going out into 2007.
A week later I see that Amazon is using another vendor to source these lenses; in effect they're giving an alternative source - trying to provide a service in my mind to you the customer.
Note that the other vendor sets the price of the item and not Amazon. There are vendors out there asking $2K for this same item?!?
I recognized this vendor because I spent about 15 hours on eBay last week after my order was canceled. Having lost several auctions I thought very hard about purchasing from this vendor through Buy Now listings in eBay.
I was lucky enough to finally win an auction at 4AM - I paid somewhere in between 799 and 949 - I probably could have gotten it less if hadn't been for another night owl - damn them!
The guy I got my lens from had been through a similar situation; unlike myself, and all the others complaining here, he'd placed orders with several vendors and three came in at once. He'd been waiting 7 months for his lens at this point.
If you want something, and this is a case of want and not need...
...quit complaining - there are alternatives - go find them!
And for those that are a little confused by this price hike - if you're in the queue with a purchase from Amazon you will pay the Amazon price - not the price quoted by the alternate vendor - you're just going to have to wait.

I am an amateur photographer. I love closeups and colorful landscapes.
This is one amazing Lens. Right out of the box..it proved itself ! Some of the test pictures I shot were just unimaginable without the VR. Focus is fast and the pictures came out sharp. I did not notice any creep.
I have a 35-70 and a 70-300 Lens. Now all I need is this lens !! No more problems of Dust getting into the CCD.
Thanks Nikon for a superb lens and thanks Amazon for the free PRIME shipping which arrived as promised !!

This is an amazing lens. It is just as everyone describes it in all these reviews. However, a note of caution when you use this as your single lens. If you are going to use it indoors WITHOUT an external flash you will create a SHADOW on your pictures. In the 18mm - 24mm range, the camera's built-in flash is too low to "look" over the end of the lens. This will create a shadow on your flashed subject. However, you can zoom in to 24mm and the issue goes away. I love only carrying one lens and the amazing VR technology allows me to take low-level light photos without a tripod.Digital camera Review: Amazing and unique

This is an incredibly capable and versatile lens which replaces every lens in an amateur's camera bag, and most in a pro's kit. Images are high-contrast and low-distortion. The zoom range is great, the image stabilization is useful and unique, and the lens is relatively compact. This is the first lens in photographic history to combine so much so well!
I am sorry for the customers who have had trouble with Amazon -- normally a good and fair retailer. I would like to offer praise for Adorama in NY. I ordered my 18-200 December '05 at the "pre-boom" price of $669 (Nikon retail was $699 then) and, even though it took 8 months for me to get the lens, they honored the price.
During the backorder time, nobody else could get the lens either, so I wasn't really missing anything. Anyway, kudos to Adorama for honoring a "contract" in a way Amazon has been unwilling or unable to do.
