Digital camera Review: I lack the linear polarizer

I bought and just made some tests on the filter but without actually employing it in the field. First impression was that its effects are much much weaker then those of a linear polarizer like the one I had from Cokin.
Surely there must be some reasons why it was not possible to devise a meter compatible with linear polarization, but it gives a strange feeling to see something degrading with the progress of technology.

Circular polarizing filters reduce or eliminate unwanted reflections and increase the overall contrast of subjects in low-contrast situations. Nikon made its line of Circular Polarizing Filter II much thinner and lighter than conventional models, allowing many lenses to be used without causing vignetting, and applied multiple layer coatings on both sides to reduce ghost images and flare.Filters
