Digital camera reviews of Nikon 7238 Action Ex Extreme 8 X 40 mm All Terrain BinocularsDigital camera Review: Good finish, slightly disappointing optics Summary: 3 Stars
Ordered these binoculars primarily to watch wildlife and am disappointed with the optics quality. I only have my late grandfather's Berkut-7 Soviet made binoculars to compare this Nikon to, so maybe the quality of Nikon is OK for the price. But I really expected Nikon to be superior optics-wise than a pair of dusty twenty-something year-old binoculars I disassembled and re-assembled when I was a child, scratching the coating and leaving my fingerprints in a few places, as well as couple of chips at the edge of the lens. Those old binoculars give a crisper image with almost no chromatic aberration, while Nikon's picture looks noticeably more blurry in high contrast areas, like edges of buildings on sky background, text on road ads far ahead, birds on snow, etc. The Nikon's picture is a bit brighter though (due to bigger objective diameter and superior/intact coating), the finish is definitely better and it's waterproof. I wish Nikon was lighter though and its eyepieces softer.

Overall, it's a good pair of binoculars (but not great), it's just that it didn't meet my expectations. Knowing this I would look at more expensive series from Nikon or other manufacturers or wouldn't buy anything at all.
Digital camera Review: Good value for bird watching Summary: 4 Stars
Having been pretty satisfied with the 10x50 version of this product, I decided to try the 8x40 version. I use them for bird watching and find they give a good clear image. Good value for the price.
Digital camera Review: Great Binoculars Summary: 5 Stars
I had originally purchased the Nikon Action 7x35 set specifically for a trip to a beach resort that had some great scenery. My in-laws were with us and my father in-law absolutely fell in love with them. We all did. I gave them to him as a gift and purchased the Nikon Action Extreme 8x40 set for me. I believe these binoculars are much better than the Action 7x35's (Waterproof, Anti-Fog, etc), but what's outstanding is that they both are great. I actually bought the Extremes because while at the beach the ocean mist would fog the Action 7x35's No complaints on either one. I believe that if you go higher than 8x40's then you'll start to notice that any slight shivering of your hands makes it very hard to focus on targets. Weight and Size will also be an issue for higher magnification. For an enthusiast like me 8x40's seem to be the limit as far as magnification and weight for manual targeting. I assume that if you used a tripod, then higher magnifications would always be possible, but if you are just in the woods or on a bike trail looking at birds, trees, etc, then these are perfect.
I'd recommend them. Anti-Fog is a must if you're at the beach, lake, waterpark with lots of mist.
Digital camera Review: Great buy Summary: 5 Stars
I use these binoculars for spotting at football games. They're clear, good field of vision and a great value for the price. Searched several different ones before buying these and I am very happy with the purchase.
Digital camera Review: Great for birding Summary: 5 Stars
I am a long-time birder and have used several different low- to mid-priced binoculars over the past 15 years. I bought these binoculars a month ago, have taken them out on 8-9 birding trips and and have found them to be excellent in all respects.
The binoculars are sturdy and well-balanced without being unduly heavy. The optics make for a very clear, bright image in all conditions. I particularly like that they have three click-stop adjustments for the length of viewing, making it easy for people wearing glasses to get the right length. I also very much appreciate the close-focus capability: about 9 feet, which is much closer than other pairs I have used and which makes them reasonably good for watching butterflies.
I would recommend these to any birder.
