Digital camera reviews of Nikon 8172 Retractable Rangefinder Tether

Digital camera Review: Does the Job
Summary: 4 Stars

I use this for scuba diving to secure my scuba console (Sherwood SPG, compass, and depth gauge) when I'm not using it. It isn't very strong on the surface, but works great underwater. My console is fairly heavy but the retractor does an adequate job on the surface keeping my console from dangling. The weight of the console pulls the tether out a few inches, but seems to hold in place. Underwater this isn't an issue and retracts fully back to the housing.

The previous tether I had was one of those phone cord types and it just created a mess. This solved the problem and keeps everything together without any tangling.

Digital camera Review: Exactly what I wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

I received one of these on my Military gear as of recently and was very impressed with the retraction and the build quality. I opted to purchase two of these for additional gear and my own needs/wants. I'm pleased to report that the "yellow" sticker is not there on any of the ones I've received and they are instead printed with a white "Nikon" painted on emblem. They have about 25lbs.. YES, 25pounds of retraction force.

These are highly recommended.

Digital camera Review: Fills the bill
Summary: 5 Stars

This works great as a retractable tether for my Bushnell laser rangefinder. I can clip it to my belt loop and it gives me piece of mind that I won't lose my investment in the rangefinder. It is very sturdily built and is made in the USA to boot! I am very happy with this product.

Digital camera Review: Good could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

Device does as promised I wish the producer would quiet it up a bit. It does rattle some while walking with my rangefinder hooked to it. I usually wait until I'm on stand to connect it to limit noise.

Digital camera Review: Great for scuba gear
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this for either my teaching slates or my primary light for scuba diving. Anyhting with the name scuba in it gets an automatic 40% price premium, but this works just as well. It has enough pull above the water to keep my slates tight to my BC, but not enough for my primary light (Princeton Tec LED Miniwave, 4C batteries), but underwater, it has enough pull to keep the light tight if I let it go. So far, no signs of rust on the ring, which is more than I can say for my other retractor, which is designed for diving. The clip is secure and easily clips to a D-ring on my BC. Overall, I wish the whole length was a little shorter, but that is very minor. If I need a future retractor, I will probably come back for another one.
