Digital camera reviews of Nikon CoolScan V LS-50 ED Film Scanner

Digital camera Review: Good results
Summary: 4 Stars

It takes a lot of time to scan each slide and then improve the old dark ones in PhotoShop Elements (much better than the picture editing software that comes with the scanner) but the results are worth it. I get some reading done while doing the scanning, then run all the images through Photoshop. It's great that I can set the scanner to output in almost any format--.tiff, .jpg, etc. The "ICE" works great at removing the dust and age marks. I'm digitizing a huge collection of family photos, some more than 50 years old. The digital images look better than the originals and will print better, too.

I had a little trouble at the beginning, but starting over and re-installing the scanner software solved the problem--must have been an error on my part. Unfortunately, you do have to install the Nikon photo-editing software as well as the scanner software even if you use only the latter, but today's computers have so much memory that it's not a problem.

Digital camera Review: Good scanner, recommend it.
Summary: 4 Stars

Nice scanner that works very simply from the box. Its only problem is that it requires quite a lot of memmory unless adjusted via the computer, but this can be done. Results are very nice. Wish there was a feeder with this scanner but none is made by Nikon.

Digital camera Review: Great Product...Really Sloowww...But Worth It
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this scanner really quite simply to scan all 600 of our wedding negatives as we have no digital version of our wedding pics. After you play with the settings a little, and get a bit of a system and momentum we have been able to scan a 5 pic negative in about 30-35 mins. This includes the initial scan to preview, changing the settings on each individual picture to where we want them, re-drawing, then scanning to file. We are scanning our stuff at 14 bits (higher resolution), Digital Ice Enabled (on Fine), Post Processing (Digital ROC, Digital GEM and Digital DEE) enabled and Post Processing enabled. With these settings, at this rate...it will take us 70 hours to do all 600 pics. The software really does an amazing job on the original pictures. Our wedding was shot in black and white, and the initial/preview scans look really grainy. After we get done modifying them, the grainy-ness is gone and the pictures are sooo clear. Much more detail is revealed than we had previously thought.

Since most of our pics over the last 7 years have been digital, we shouldn't have a need for the scanner after we're done with the wedding pics, and maybe a handful of other misc. rolls of film...so we think the time invested will provide us with a digital record of all our pictures and be well worth it.

If you have the time, this less expensive option is well worth it.

Digital camera Review: Great Results using the Coolscan with iMac.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have an extensive 35mm slide collection spanning the last 20 years. Have decided to digitize it. I doubt one could find a better system for the money. I use the Digital ICE on 99.9% of slides, it works very well removing scratches and lint. The Digital DEE can produce excellent results on underexposed photos, I am finding it works very well in recovering "almost" good pics (remember the days of the Canon AE-1?). I use the ROC and GEM sparingly. The ROC can be useful for those "blue" pics.

I highly recommend this product. You will see details in these images you have never seen using a slide projector! Note: Have at least 512Mb of RAM, the images are big.

Digital camera Review: Great Scanner
Summary: 4 Stars

On July 19, I gave this scanner one star and wrote:

"Film strip adapter was DOA right out of the box. The scanner goes back to the store tomorrow, and if the new one works I'll change my rating."

I returned the non-working scanner for another one, which works perfectly. Set up was easy, and I didn't have to refer to the manual too often to use the Nikon Scan software. Scans are stunning! I feel like I got a great deal considering this is Nikon's cheapest scanner.
