I bought this to replace my Coolpix 5000 which had decided to give up the ghost after six years. After looking at various cameras I decided to buy the S51. After a month of owning the camera I can say, I am most pleased. The image quality is excellent and I find the image stabilization really helpful after few too many espressos or when dealing with the Oklahoma winds. I found the menu system to be pretty well laid out, and the 3 inch LCD is great for seeing what you are shooting and has very good accuracy. My only minor complaint would be the lack of a protective coating over the LCD, I mostly likely would have removed it anyway, but it would be nice to have the option since it smudges rather easily. All in all it is a great camera, which will serve me well until I buy a DSLR.Digital camera Review: Great Buy!!!

I first have to say... I love AMAZON they have the greatest deals and great service!!! My husband and I went to Best Buy to see if we can find me a good camera and of course at a great price. Well, they had the camera which is the Nikon S51 but it was for 229.99. Went home did my homework and shopped around online, and as I expected AMAZON had the best deal!! What was great about it as well, was that I was able to read all the reviews on it and that helped me with my purchase. I ordered the camera and got it within days. It came well, packaged and it was everything I wanted!! It was everything Best Buy had to offer but at a lower price! Amazon offers a great price for this little camera.
It's attractive, tiny, and takes great pictures. The screen on the back is HUGE for such a small camera, which is great but I tend to get fingerprints all over it. It has tons of nifty features that lead to hours of fun.
My only complaints are about the same as everyone else's: The On/Off button is right on top, and when you press it, the reaction is instant. I guess that's a good thing if you want your camera to turn on quickly, but it's easy to accidentally hit when taking a picture and if you keep it in your pocket or purse, it'll turn on and off all day and run the battery down. Also, there's a pretty big delay when you try to snap a picture. If you like spontaneous portraits of your kids, pets, or anything that won't sit still for long, this may not be the best camera for you. However, it's still a great camera and those things really haven't been a big problem for me.
If you buy this camera and intend to use it often, I'd suggest buying an extra battery (make sure it's a genuine Nikon, or you'll void the warranty). To charge the battery, you must take it out of the camera and place it in the battery charger. A fully exhausted battery takes about 2 hours to charge completely. But, if you keep an extra, fully charged battery around, you can just pop it in and continue snapping pictures.

I'm sure you could find a better camera for a similar price and a MUCH better camera for alot more money, but I'm not sure you'll find too many cameras with this many features that take such great pictures...& in a compact design that you can literally take anywhere. I have a Canon Rebel that I take with me on trips and to do "serious" photography, but I just love carrying this little camera with me everythere I go in my bag. You'd be surprised how many cool things you come across that you'd take a picture of...if you only had a camera with you. This camera takes great photos: I took a picture of my cat and you can see every hair and whisker detail. The black is nice too, its a very sharp looking camera, and the screen size is another good feature.
The things I am not so happy about:
- time it takes to snap a photo - although not quite as long as an older digital would take, the newer Canon camera snaps photos much quicker (the only reason we didn't by the Canon is because another family member has it and we didn't want to always get it confused)
- The picture quality - the pictures aren't the best quality I've seen, they tend to look a little washed out with the flash.
- The battery life really is not good with this camera, but this could have to do with the placement of the on/off button and it accidentally turning on when putting it away.
All and all, I am probably just being picky, as the camera was only $170 and I would say it is definitely worth that, especially if you're looking for a small portable one.
