I have read many reviews on this camera--ranging from excellent to very poor. We have owned the Nikon S550 for 3 months, and we would like to suggest a few basic adjustments which make this camera super.
For indoor flash shots, the automatic setting is not perfect for all circumstances. Use the "exposure compensation" selection menu (the switch with the "+/-" labeled on it) for many shots. We find that adjusting the exposure down to -.07 is perfect for most indoor shots involving faces in normal lighting. For action shots, set the exposure meter up a bit. We tried to make several manual adjustments for different needs, and this will work. However, if you try the wide variety of settings within the "scene" selection, you will be amazed with what can be accomplished. We live in Colorado--with many snow field type of shots. The "beach/snow" mode is great. The "landscape" setting is excellent for regular or zoom shots of scenery. The "sunset" and "dusk/dawn" settings will knock you out for any shots taken at or near sunup or sundown. "Night landscape" mode will give you a chance to take mood shots you never thought possible. We are still experimenting with the numerous other scene modes.
This is a 10 mega pixel camera, with 5x zoom, and with a Nikkor lens and Nikon quality. If you learn to use this great, lightweight camera--so that you get the most out of it--you will love it. The Amazon price is unbelievably low. We made the mistake of buying elsewhere, and we regret it. Amazon always has the best price and service.

Was looking for an efficient camera with a broad range of capabilities. This camera did the job.
The strap for carrying the camera should be used all the time because it can easily slip out of hand without it.
My first CoolPix had a strap that was long enough to carry around the neck.
That was a much more secure method of safety from dropping the camera. I tucked it into a pocket, or belt and never had to worry if it slipped out of place. (I purchased a case but it is a pain to be taking it in and out). Other than that, - it is great! I plan to purchase an extra battery as an emergency backup.

This camera outperformed other small cameras of its class, and proved that it is worth the price I paid. I was overjoyed to see my "little" nikon work its magic at a wedding reception. It had a fantastic battery life, the pictures were clear and precise and most importantly, it did not disappoint!
