Digital camera Review: Autofocus breaks after 7 months

After 7 months of light use, my Coolpix S630 has died. I noticed a constant whirring noise when I turned it on. I then noticed that the focus on the screen was going in-out-in-out etc. I called Nikon and their tech support said that I needed to send it in for repairs. When I tried to find out if this was covered under warrenty, they told me that I would have to pay for any repairs.
If Nikon will not fix a camera that does even last 1 year, then I am done with Nikon.
