Digital camera reviews of Nikon D60 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom LensDigital camera Review: D40 replacement - NOT upgrade Summary: 3 Stars
If you are torn between the D40 and the D60, pick the D40. It has 95% of the functionality of the D60 and it's much cheaper. Both cameras share the biggest limitation of not having an Auto Focus motor and only 3 focus points so you're likely to outgrow both at the same time. At least with the D40, you'll have a much lower investment while you learn about photography. Don't get me wrong, both take great pictures given the right conditions and lenses, but don't under-estimate the lack of an AF motor.
If you have D60 money, I would STRONGLY recommend getting the D80 instead. It may cost a little more, but you will quickly pay for that if you purchase the 50mm 1.8 lens that actually does autofocus on the D80 plus countless other older AF style lenses that do not AF on the D60 or D40.
Again, the reason why I'm giving the D60 3 stars is not about the picture because it is a good camera, but it's very over priced as of this writing. Once the D90 comes out, the D60 will be Nikon's starter DSLR the way the D40 is but make no mistake, the D60 and D40 are in the same class and the D40 is a much better bargin. That's why so many people love it.
Digital camera Review: D40 vs D60? Go for the... Summary: 3 Stars
Using D40 for about a year, amazing camera! Also, bought a D60 'cause thought the 10MP would produce noticeably better pics. Unless you need larger than 11x14 prints, you won't see a difference. The sensor-cleaner sounds out-of-sight, but...it's REALLY not needed. And, the D60 10MP actually produces MORE NOISE (traslation, a less sharp looking image).
If you can live without autofocus and can handle manual exposure setting, the D40 used with a SUPER-SHARP prime NIKKOR AI lens will give you amazingly bright, sharp, crisp images that NO zoom lens (VR or otherwise) can compare with...regardless of price! Anyhow, the D40 is about $100 less than the D60 (which actually feels more cheaply made).
Net, net...the D40 and D60 can both produce great images. But if you want the best of the best, sharpness and impact-wise, do yourself a favor and try the D40 with a prime lens (such as the amazing Nikkor AI f1.8 50mm). Definitely still use the supplied kit D40 autofocus 18-55mm zoom for everyday snapshots. But, when time permits, experience real quality and use the D40 to capture the sharpest, most noise-free and outstanding images you'll ever take!
Digital camera Review: D60 Honest Review Summary: 4 Stars
If you are just getting started with DSLR's this is probably too much, however if you are vagely familiar with terms such as aperture, speed, ISO, Under-Over Exposed blah blah... this is it!! It's very user friendly, lightweight, excellent resolution, the attached flash is o.k. not great.... the battery will go for hours, i just took it in my first assignmet for about 4 hours over 700 pics and the battery still reads full. I bought a 8 GB SD card... it will take more than 1.4 k in full res...over 26k in minimun res... buttom line... if you know at least the basics of photography this is it even for pro's.... if this is your first "real" camera...i'd think twice about it.
Digital camera Review: D60 does the job! Summary: 5 Stars
The D60 has been the best bang for my buck! I definitely recommend this camera for anyone wanting to get into the Digital SLR field without paying an arm and a leg for it.
Digital camera Review: D60 is a keeper Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the D60 with 18-55VR kit lens for about 3 weeks. I also bought the 55-200VR lens primarily so I could photograph my fiance's son in his HS football games. I am very pleased with the camera, its ease of operation, how it performs in low light, and the quality of the images it produces. I find myself often using the camera in burst mode to take 10-20 images in succession while tracking with the football. I get some good shots that way, plus I can put them into a stop-motion movie using the camera. I learned at last week's game from a couple parents that our football player has been posting some of my images online and they have been getting rave reviews. (In fact, one of the Moms has already been talking to Santa Claus!) It's light. It's easy. It's fun. I don't need what this camera doesn't have, such as movie mode.
