Digital camera reviews of Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)Digital camera Review: BEAUTIFUL Summary: 5 Stars
I love it. I am a university student who takes photography fairly seriously as a hobby. I shoot lots of portraiture for friends and lots for fun as well. The High ISO capabilities of the D90 make it great for shooting concerts in low light. LiveView and Movie mode are slow, but who cares? I never planned on using those anyway.
Overall a superb camera. Easy to use, intuitive, great results, and fun to use!
Digital camera Review: Bad luck Summary: 1 Stars
Just got back from a trip to Alaska and camera worked about 50% of the time (F-- error on screen; sometimes(!) removing the battery would reset it). Many of the pictures I was able to take are overexposed. Bad camera? Will send in for warranty but that won't undo the lost opportunities, frustration, and aggravation caused.
Digital camera Review: Bells & Whistles Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the camera by itself with the Nikon 18-200mm lens. I'm really excited to move up from my Nikon N55 and I'm really impressed! I love being able to pick what I want to print and see what I want to keep, or need to re-shoot.
PROS
design (buttons, two separate dials, great for setting f-stop and aperture)
battery life
3 inch screen
pick your focus point
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO!!
CONS
cannot figure out continuous shooting!!
video mode when you move the camera around
Auto-focus in live view...annoying!
Digital camera Review: Bery nice step-up from a D80 Summary: 5 Stars
I have read that some do not agree that stepping up from a D80 to a D90 is a good move due to how closely related these DSLR's are, but they could not be more wrong!
I am not saying that the D80 is not a good performer (I still have one of mine), but when compared to the D90 (baby D300 :-), it is a little behind.
Image quality wise, the D80 stil rocks, and I still use it during photo shoots, however, the D90 has exceeded all of my expectations by comparison.
The D90 is much faster in EVERYTHING that it does!
The D90 has a better, more functional menu system!
The D90 has more sophisticated picture controls!
The D90 has a faster frame rate!
The D90 has a larger LCD screen!
and there is something special about that CMOS sensor in my opinion!
I will be honest in saying the D90 takes a bit of getting used to (color reproduction wise) when compared to the D80, but once you have it dialed in exactly how you want it to be, you will be EXTREMELY satisfied!
I am satisfied with my D90 in every way, and am considering selling my D80 to get a 2nd D90...maybe.
Please understand, I still use my D80 almost as much as my D90, but when it comes to doing my highly important paid work, I reach for my D90 first...but then again, who wouldn't.
I would speak about it's phenominal high ISO performance (the real reason why I bought one...not the video..don't use it), but after a little internet research, I'm sure you'll be able to find more than I can tell you. Just trust me, it is worlds beyond the D80 in that aspect! Nikon has found a way to master it's noise compression!
This camera is HIGHLY recommended!!!
Digital camera Review: Best All-around Choice Summary: 5 Stars
It's interesting how most of the complaints about the D90 are quite clearly due to user ignorance/stupidity, and have little or nothing to do with the camera itself. But that's enough ranting, let me just say the D90 is my all-time favorite of many, many, MANY digital and film SLRs I have owned. I find myself choosing it over far more expensive options most of the time.
It is, hands-down, your best option for traveling, due to its relatively light weight, compact size, common-sense controls, and auto-setting options that come in very handy when you just don't have the time (or inclination) to work out the perfect f-shop & shutter speed. And for the obligatory shot of you and your family in front of the Taj Mahal, the green "auto-everything" mode is a virtual guarantee that even that prosthetic device salesman from Cleveland that you're entrusting with this irreplaceable photo will get it right.
I bought it primarily for traveling, but as mentioned, it turns out to be my preference in lots of other situations too. Nikon has announced repeatedly that the D90 will remain in their line, even after the "replacement" D7000 comes out, so I guess a lot of other folks feel the same sort of loyalty. In fact, I just ordered a second one to serve as my backup for field work, after schlepping the much heavier D300s one too many times.
One caviat: although it does shoot videos, it's not a video camera; and you will not want to use it as your primary instrument for videos. If you're upgrading from a D80 solely for the video capability (as people keep telling me they are), I would strongly suggest that you keep the D80, buy a Flip for a hundred bucks, and save a pile of dough.
