Nice little piece of equipment, good for a second on-camera flash or a primary for many shooters. One of the best points is that this light will work on most Nikons including those from years past. Bought it for my D40 and it really improves indoor and low light photography among other things.
This is the first speedlight I have ever purchased, but it has already been six months since I purchased it and it has not ever failed.

SB-600 FlashNikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
I love this flash. I have a D300 so I have been using the built in flash but I bought this flash for more power and to use the built in Commander functionality of the D300 to fire this flash remotely for more flexibility and power. I plan on doing more painting with light and Macro photography so getting the flash off the camera is one of my ways to do so. You will need to buy a book or something to learn all about the power of this system. Plan for it and use it.

I would like to share my experience with this external flash with other amateurs/beginners. When I got my Nikon D40 and when I first upgraded to the D90, I never thought I would get an external flash. I thought the built-in flah would fulfill all my needs for flash photography. Then when I discovered that some of my shots are less than satisfactory, I decided to get the SB600. Please see my picture of the red-tailed hawk. I would never have got the same results with the built-in flash.
IMHO, if you want to improve your photography, an external flash such as this is essential.
