I use two of these flashes as slaves to an SB-800. Battery consumption is an issue. I can do only about four hours of shooting before I need to replace the batteries. I use alkaline batteries, but will be switching to rechargeables soon. I do outdoor portraits, and use the 600s shot into umbrellas. iTTL works great with the 800. (Or slave setting on the D70, and D300. Cameras I own.) Changing to manual control is a snap.
I can only recommend this flash as a slave because I haven't used it any other way, and I can only assume it will perform as well as a main flash.

This unit is great. I have it mounted on a Nikon D90, and it makes a huge difference in photo quality. D90 is a great camera, but for inside shots, more than 50% of the quality comes from the flash. I was told that some of my indoor photos look like made by a professional. And I"m not, it's just the flash that made them so. I also like that you can tilt it sideways (to bounce off the ceiling in portrait mode).Digital camera Review: Awesome for $215!

I had 2 SB800s. One was stolen and I didn't want to buy the SB900, since it is huge and expensive and I mainly only used one flash, so the other would be back-up. I figured after reading some reviews to get this little guy instead.
Upon arrival I was pleasantly surprised on how efficient and light it is. The power output is better than I thought and it works just as well as the SB800 in almost every respect. I shot a wedding with it after purchase and the photos came out great!
Extremely happy with this purchase!

This is the first flash unit Ive purchased in about five or six years and I couldn't have had more fun with it. Mostly because its the most advanced flash Ive ever owed, but its simple enough not to overwhelm a newbie. i am very surprised at the awesome quality and value of the SB-600.
its easy to use... great build... and awesome results...
i have a SB-800 and tried using SB-600 as a remote flash, and it was a breeze to set it up...
simply put if you are on a budget or just want a extra flash or simply want to buy something tried and tested and great value for money... look no further and go for SB-600
