Digital camera reviews of Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras - Old Version

Digital camera Review: Are you serious?
Summary: 3 Stars

At the time of this writing the SB-800 is being sold for $595.95 while the SB-900 is being sold at $570.00, but being sold in the $400 range. Even for those who aren't aware, the SB-800 is the predecessor to the SB-900, so paying more for the SB-800 is insanity.

Digital camera Review: Awesome flash
Summary: 5 Stars

This flash on a Nikon camera using iTTL (through the lens automatic) makes great pictures. The flash is very powerful, automatically adjusts to the width of your zoom lens (up to 105mm) and is one of the reasons that Nikon is so well known for being the wedding photographer's choice of camera. It's a superior system to anything out there on a capable Nikon (I use a Nikon D2Xs and Nikon D70s, a Mamiya 645 Pro TL and a Zenza Bronica ETRS II, but everyone with a D40 and up will love this flash).

Digital camera Review: BETTER THAN SB-900!!
Summary: 4 Stars

This flash is WAY better than the SB-900. I have bought a second SB-800 because I had one SB-800 and one SB-900 and I shoot weddings. I used to used the 900 and my second shooter used the 800, but my 900 started overheating after just a few shots, so I would have to take the 800 from my second shooter, leaving him with the crappy 900. SO, I will now be using 2 800s.

Digital camera Review: Best Nikon Flash for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

Great flash for your Nikon Digital camera, from the old, rugged, D70 right up to the D3s and D3X. With the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) that was created for the D70 and just about every D-series DSLR after it, you can get the lighting you need and more.
I use a D90, and in Commander mode, I can use three different channels and up to 4 flashes per channel to achieve the lighting configuration I need for my portrait work. Put it on the camera in TTL mode, and I have nothing to worry about. The photo comes out exposed perfectly. Change from landscape to portrait shots and need to bounce the flash off the ceiling? No problem! This flash has two degrees of rotation (90 deg up and 7 deg down and 90 deg left and 90 deg right {180 deg total} of movement. This flash is simply a joy to work with!
I think it is better, both in price and performance, to the SB-900, as I don't feel the 900 does much more for the added money.
I bought this flash because of three things: performance, price and versatility. The performance part I've already gone over. The price point when I got it was around $300, so I couldn't pass it up then and I am glad I did. Lastly, this flash, in slave mode, makes my photographic life all the easier now. The kicker is my wife can now use this professional flash on my old D70 I gave to her!

Digital camera Review: Best battery powered flash... anywhere!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been in photography less than a year, it still took me about 45 minutes to figure out the SB-800. This includes using it in full off camera iTTL CLS mode as well as Remote and SU-4 mode on my D200.

While on a recent vacation, I set the flash manually to 1/2 power and was able to clearly light and see people in my pictures. This would not be impressive, except that it was in a totally dark arena and the people that I lit and clearly captured were on the OTHER FAR SIDE of the arena (mind you, this is width, not length-wise. NO flash can do this distance the long way on 1/2 power!). The SB-800 is extremely powerful as a flash.

This strobe is still as of today (April 2008), the STRONGEST on camera flash available on the market, it is also the most versatile. I've used it in conjunction as a bounce flash, fill flash and trigger flash for 120v studio strobes that have integrated optical triggers. I have used it as a remote flash to create amazingly well lit and professional looking portraits of family and friends. I am adding a second (possibly third as well) SB-800 to my collection to be able to have an extremely versatile and powerful portable flash setup.

I've put my SB-800 through hell and back, and it has never let me down. If you are a serious professional or an enthusiastic amateur like myself with a Nikon camera, you cannot make a better choice of flash than Nikon's SB-800.
