Digital camera Review: A solid accessory for traveling with the 70-200 f2.8 VR

I purchased this teleconverter before a 2-week trip to Africa. It was hard swallowing the cost (hence 4 stars instead of 5) but in the end it was well worth it. My AF-S 70-200mm f2.8 VR1 lens Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras essentially became a 119-340 f4 while being much smaller and lighter (not to mention much cheaper) than the 200-400 f4. We had very strict size and weight restrictions on our bags so size was very important not to mention the weight of carrying this around for days at a time.
The fact that the VR function of your lens will still work with this attached is vital since the farther out you zoom the more VR matters. I was able to shoot at full zoom at 1/60 shutter speed hand-held with no problems.
Other than the price, the other detractor is that it needs a special body cap since a standard Nikon body cap won't fit. I imagine they couldn't make the design work any other way but it's still an annoyance.
Overall though the teleconverter was spectacular and made the wonderful 70-200 lens even wonderfuller. :)

The Nikon TC-17E II was designed exclusively for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, and completes the Nikon lineup of 1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x compact teleconverters. This teleconverter will maintain full metering and focusing with compatible cameras and lenses, and will also support the VR function found on many of the newer professional lenses.The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to be extended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining a sense of overall comfort in the hand. Many such teleconverters can also have a detrimental effect on the speed of the lens, however the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stops slower.NOTE: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (7 elements/4 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses.NOTE: Autofocusing only possible when used with D1, D1X, D1H, D2H, D100, F5, F100, N90s, N80, N75 and N65 AF SLR Cameras (or any newer models).Lenses
