Digital camera reviews of OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD, DVD-Audio, and VRS TechnologyDigital camera Review: A Very Versatile and Great Sounding Blu-ray Disc Player Summary: 5 Stars
The following comments are from my husband who wanted this Blu-ray player. He received this as a gift.
I became interested in the Oppo BDP-83 because I was looking for a Blu-ray player that could play my Super Audio CDs and DVD Audio discs as well and the Oppo was the only one I found for under $4k. I did some research on the Oppo Blu-ray player and the Oppo DVD player (also SACD and DVD-A capable) and heard almost entirely good things. If it was half as good as the reviews it would be a steal for $500.
Upon receiving the player I was first impressed by the packing which was very strudy and used high density closed cell foam which was actually capable of absorbing significant shock and vibration instead of the usual styrofoam. The unit was also packed in a cloth carrying case (a nice touch but of questionable utility). The unit also came with 2 Blu-ray set-up discs and, wonder of wonders, an HDMI cable.
Setup was easy for so flexible device and even offered a variety of display configurations including the ability to keep 3:4 formatted programming in the correct aspect ratio. There is quite a bit op optional set-up capability but as yet I haven't felt the need to use it, however, playing the two set-up discs provided a nice confirmation that my system was set up properly.
I cannot fully assess the video performance of the player because of the limited capability of my 720p television but the picture is superior to that from my satellite dish. It plays pretty much anything that I have to put in it Except DVD-RAM including my recordings on DVD-R and DVD+R discs (I don't use and haven't tried DVD -/+RW discs).
Now to the audio performance. In a word outstanding! While the unit does pass high def audio from Blu-ray discs as well as DVD-A and SACD digital audio to my receiver for decoding, I have found that the Oppo does a better job of digital to analog conversion than my receiver. My receiver is a Yamaha RSV-663 who's D to A performance I had always been satisfied with but the Oppo is significantly better. As compared to using the internal D to A converter of the Yamaha, the multichannel direct input from the Oppo yields an increase in inner detail, enhanced imaging, and a sense of space that is very impressive. It's not that the Yamaha isn't good, the Oppo is just better. As an Audio Player alone, the Oppo is more than worth the price.
The Oppo also has some data reading capability. It reads GIF, PNG and JPG pictures and plays MP3, MP3 Pro, and WMA audio from Data CDs, DVDs, or, through the USB port, from a thumb drive or even an SDI card (with a USB adapter). It also reads digital movies from the USB device though I haven't tried that yet. It does not, unfortunately, read wave files, either the standard or high definition variety.
The inability of the Oppo to read wave files, especially 24 bit 96 kilohertz and higher high definition wave files is my biggest quibble with this otherwise outstanding component. That aside, the Oppo is a truly outstanding multi format player that does almost everything well and high definition audio wonderfully.
Digital camera Review: A great little machine. Summary: 5 Stars
It arrived on time as suggested. It was very easy to setup and the picture and sound is marvelous. The one catch is that the sound output from my cable provider is quite a bit lower than this machine, so I have to adjust between them when I switch. I have a stereo AVR and the sound is great! It plays all blu-ray disks so far. I highly recommend it.
Digital camera Review: A new definition in sound Summary: 5 Stars
Many here have written about the video quality of this unit so I'm not going to go into that too much. I received this unit as one of the early birds a year ago in April and I connected the audio via 7.1 analogue to my Marantz receiver since I don't have an HDMI connection. The most remarkable thing about my first use was not even the Blu ray HD stuff, but how stunning the sound came through on a regular DVD. I was hearing bird chirping from the back speakers on the early part of the LOTR The Fellowship. This added a level of serenity to the movie experience that the director had intended and that I had not been able to experience ever before. Later I was totally mesmerized by my first SACD experiences with Dark Side of the Moon and Brother's in Arms.
A friend I invited recently to listen to these said he has a whole new perspective on what surround sound can do for music when the combination of a correctly recorded media is played in a truly outstanding player.
Digital camera Review: A technical masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
This player is fantastic! The packaging is out of this world and you receive a free HDMI cable!!!
Also, firmware upgrades allows the owner to make it a truly universal player! And they work!
OPPO: you made my life much better!
Digital camera Review: ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT, PERIOD! Summary: 5 Stars
I gave some thought to writing a long, detailed, glowing review of this extraordinary item and its many "stellar" attributes, but I won't bother. I'll simply say this . . . in terms of the quality of its overall construction, the quality of its video/audio playback, its smooth, quiet speed of loading, and quick response time to remote control commands, the Oppo BDP-83 is simply the single finest blu-ray player available on the market today, period! Its magnificent! If you're converting to blu-ray and high-definition home theatre, don't hesitate to buy the Oppo BDP-83. It will compare favorably to any device you'll ever own, regardless of cost. Kudos to Oppo! Five stars + !!!
