Digital camera Review: Best Blu-Ray Player You Can Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

With so many decent players now in the 100-200 dollar price range it was a little hard to justify the 500 dollar price tag. Once you turn this on you realize this isn't your average blu-ray player. The menus are clean, responsive, and EVERY change can be done on the fly while the movie is playing in the background. This was very useful when setting up my sound because I could compare differences in the settings without stopping the disc. I've used other blu-ray players where I put in a blu-ray disc and have to wait several minutes just to see something pop up on the TV. This player is so fast I've never had to wait more than 20 seconds for a movie to load. Amazing.

Yes, if you have a 400 dollar generic TV I wouldn't go out and buy this player. Go buy a Panasonic BD60 for a fraction of the price. However, the Oppo is a videophile quality player for a fraction the price of its competitors. I plan on enjoying my Oppo for years to come.

Digital camera Review: Best Blu-Ray Player on the Market
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are evaluating this blu-ray player on what it's supposed to do, it's the best. It's far faster than its competitors; audio/video quality is amazing; upscaling of standard DVDs is fantastic. The BDP-83 can display 1080p at 24Hz, and can upconvert standard DVDs to 24Hz as well for the movie theater-like framerate.

It's also extremely stable - the Samsung model that I replaced had a frustratingly nonresponsive remote and the tendency to lock up every few weeks. The BDP-83 has never given me any issues. One great thing that may have helped in this area is that Oppo gave a bunch of players to active folks in the AV community well before the release date as a sort of beta test and then worked out the kinks ahead of time, instead of using early purchasers as guinea pigs and then fixing the issues through firmware updates. Oppo got it right with the first push.

Cons: No WiFi, no streaming capabilities.

My solution for these cons: Plug in the player to an ethernet port and use another box for your streaming needs - I stream Netflix through my Tivo and Pandora through my AVR.

Those features are nice to have - and if Oppo made a higher end player with streaming, I would probably buy it - but even without them, it can't be beat.

Digital camera Review: Best Blu-Ray and Audio player player I own
Summary: 5 Stars

I currently Own a BDP-83, Setup Yamaha RX-V663 via HDMI, PS3 60gb model with Sacd playback. Sound setup is 5.1.

Setup issues

Yamaha and SACD playback
Initial Problem with SACD skipping. Took a moment to nail this one down but turned out to be a issue back at the receiver. Newer receivers can be mapped to handle multiple possible inputs for sound on one Device selection. I deleted all other inputs for the DVD and left only the HDMI as a possible selection. 2 things happened, the audio increased in volume and the skipping went away.

Yamaha and DVD-A playback
Oppo recommends a particular setting for DVD-A, Bitstream over LPCM. I have 1 or 2 DVD-A audio cds. I use Linda Ronstadt "What's New" with Nelson Riddle Orchestra. This DVD-A never sounded that great. On bitstream it finally sounded better after about 7 years of owning the DVD-A cd. Definite increased range but only at 96khz. This one can be played back at 192kz, the Oppo does not seem to playback the higher one (I could not find a setting for this). Only drawback to this was that the DVD-A had a music video and the only way to hear the sound for that was to switch it back to LPCM mode.

These were my only real setup issues so I did a playback comparison to the PS3 and showed better picture and sound on the Oppo for both. Used Bladerunner to compare image and definitely sharper and clearer on the Oppo it's image detail is dead on.

PS3 is bass heavy on the SACD playback, it's a gaming system though and kind of expected. Used Toto IV Stereo layer to compare as I had 2 copies to work with. Better sound separation from the Oppo was able to hear the bass guitar on the Oppo when on the PS3 it sounded muddled and a little lost amongst the drums.

Better menus than I have ever seen from Oppo. This is my preferred
Blu-ray/CD/SACD/DVD-A player now.

Clarification on the DVD_A playback
Bitstream/LPCM setting is for the HDMI output. LPCM does have a rate setting for up to 192khz, but the DVD-A I have still only plays back at 96 khz even when the HDMI is set to LPCM mode is up to 192khz. I am assuming the DVD-A is currently limited to the 96 khz on the player. Bitstream does sound better than LPCM mode over the HDMI.

Digital camera Review: Best Blu-Ray player below $2000
Summary: 5 Stars

It is hard to find fault with this beautifully designed and manufactured player. It does everything as promised and does it well enough to beat all competition. The price is the icing on the cake.
