I heard about the OPPO and read some of the reviews before buying it for my Panny 42" Plasma.
I hadn't been able to view some of my CD\DVD purchases from the UK til now. Now I can and it's awesome.
I also found extra media content when I stuck in my "Lord of the rings" Extended DVD's, my old APEX player didn't.
I love my OPPO :)
Buy one, you can't lose.
Digital camera Review: DVD+/-R compatability

The unit did not play Verbat*m DVD+R discs. It played Verbat*m DVD-R, Hewl*tt Pack*rd DVD+R, S*ny DVD+R, and S*ny DVD-R. It even played some of my old knock off DVD disks. It played everything except the Verbat*m DVD+R discs.
On most movies the picture is excellent. If the movie was recorded in soft focus, nothing will help. If the original movie was done with soft focus to make the actors wrinkles disappear, this player will show only what is on the disc. It made a clear improvement over my old player and the sound is better.
The cable is excellent. I hated spending the money, but it was worth it.

I bought the 980H as the 971 is no longer available and the 981 can't upconvert over component cables---the 981 doesn't even have component connections!
This is a great DVD player although it's not quite as good at upconversion as the 971/981 models equpped with the Faroudja chip.
Not sure what other reviewers are smoking...DVD picture quality is NOWHERE as good as Blue Ray/HD DVD (yes, I own them) but this player is very good for DVDs.
The old trick to make Oppo's region free still works. ---With no disk in the drive, press "setup" Type 9 2 1 0 on the remote. A hidden menu appears--note the "1" for region. Press "0" (region free) to change it, press "setup" to exit.
Overall a great player, wish Oppo still made a component connected DVD player with a faroudja chip, but since they don't, the 980 is a great choice.

This player does not play DVDs made with 1Click DVD or recorded on Philips DVDR3575. Other DVDs and even TV shows are sometimes jerky, as if the HMDI connection to TV doesn't work very well. Am disappointed in the performance, especially after reading such glowing comments from others. Will likely disconnected, box up and stow away in closet.
