Digital camera reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioDigital camera Review: Discontinued and hard to find Summary: 5 Stars
This player for the price is top notch. Unfortunately, they discontinued this model, and everyone ran out of them rapidly as word got out how good this player was. I tried to purchase 2 more for my boys about 6 months after buying my first one. Everyone is sold out.
Digital camera Review: Does everything I wanted and more! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my third upconverting player. I had a Toshiba (which I gave to my Dad), a JVC (rates slightly above horrible), and now the Oppo. After reading magazine reviews and everyone praising this player I decided to buy one. Wish I would have bought an Oppo 2 years ago. The sound is superior to the others, picture clearer to my LG 1080i 42" LCD and everything plays perfectly. Plus I have an USB port on the front to play my Divx files. Saves time and money on burning tv episodes to a dvd or cd to view. So far no glitches, completely and utterly pleased. Highly recommend to anyone who might have doubts about this brand. Well packaged, free hdmi 6' cable, and very well made. This player ranks up there with machines twice its price.
Digital camera Review: Don't buy this expecting to play your own DVDs Summary: 2 Stars
All Oppo players are excellent players -- for commercially produced media. But if you expect to play DVDs that you make yourself, they are hit and miss. The player seems to be EXTREMELY picky about layer breaks. I have several dual layer DVDs that will play in every player I've ever put them in EXCEPT the Oppo. When I inquired from Oppo, they asked for a sample disk which I sent them. They agree that there is a problem. This problem has persisted for several years (my previous player, a DV971, had the same issues). They also say it is on the back burner while their engineers focus on "higher priority tasks." Their DVD player does not play DVDs -- how can there be a higher priority task than fixing that? It has been a problem for long enough that Google turns up workarounds.
I will say that for commercially produced disks, and for single layer disks, there is probably not a better player for the money. However, if you expect it to play your dual layer discs, forget it. Sony will play them, Toshiba will play them, JVC will play them, Samsung will play them, LG will play them, Pioneer will play them, Panasonic will play them . . . . and Oppo will just throw up its little hands and claim that there is no second layer. And Oppo, the company, will claim that it is just not a serious problem.
So if your plans do not include playing dual layer disks, buy it. Otherwise, just walk on by.
Digital camera Review: Don't know if its worth the money. Summary: 4 Stars
Nothing wrong with this unit. However I wonder if spending over $100 is worth the video quality. Hard to compare unless you have TV's side by side with different players. Looks good, nice display. Like the saving of bookmarks. As far as 7.1 audio, it has optical output, so again wondering if all the RCA jacks are necessary. HDMI cable included is nice but wonder how much of that is included in price. Overall I'm satisfied, a little remorse on price.
Digital camera Review: Everything I could ask for Summary: 5 Stars
Everyone's reviews are right on. I would just add that the USB 2.0 feature is awesome in case you miss your favorite TV show and download it, it's just like you were watching it when it was broadcast.
