Digital camera reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio

Digital camera Review: Another Convert to OPPO
Summary: 5 Stars

After weeks of reading customer reviews and checking the OPPO site, I finally decided to get the OPPO DV-980H DVD player and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I also recently got a new HD TV (SHARP LC-32D62U)and am in the process of replacing our Sony Compact AV System (about 6 years old) with a new Onkyo receiver that can manage both my old and new equipment. This OPPO is replacing the 5 disc CD/DVD player in the Sony TIB. I also hope, eventually, to get either an HD or Blu-ray player, but the OPPO seemed an excellent intermediate step (and maybe, if I wait, OPPO will build a "true HD" player!).

I am still learning what this machine can do, but for now I'll just mention a few things that I thought made this player a standout:

a) first thing you notice is the exceptional packaging, including a cloth case for the player...first class and really sets the stage for what's to come;
b) sylish black case with a clean, high-quality "look";
c) inclusion of an HDMI cord...how refreshing to have something "extra" included;
d) easy set up right out of the box;
e) great picture on our SHARP 1080p HD TV connected to the OPPO via HDMI;
f) all of the possible connections you could want or need on the back;
g) excellent response time and support via email from OPPO customer service when I had a question about sound settings;
h) FUN THING...you can "capture" a picture that is input from the OPPO to the TV to replace the OPPO background screen...and it's really easy to do!
i) picture resolution settings are visible on the outside of the player and can be easily controlled via an HDMI button on the remote...no having to go into menus.

I could go on and on, but would only be repeating much of what others have already said. Let me just add that I'm sure this player will allow me to get the best possible picture from our current and rented DVD's until the time when HD players (including both HD & Blu-ray) are more affordable and HD rental DVD's are available in our area. I'm definitely an OPPO convert! I can't believe more people haven't heard of this product!

Digital camera Review: As advertised...
Summary: 4 Stars

So far so good. Watched an Xvid movie with no problems that would not play on a Philips Divx player. Only minor complaint, remote seems to be a little sluggish.

Digital camera Review: As close to blu-ray as you can get!
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't hesitate to add this quality player to your home entertainment system if you're looking to upconvert your standard dvd collection! The picture is absolutely stunning with additional detail and clarity. The the player itself is loaded with additional options. What works particularly well is the stretching of a 4:3 standard dvd to your 16:9 screen size, with little if any distortion. I have a 52" Samsung DLP system and the picture is almost as good as HD. Do not skip the instructions in the proper setup of the player, in that it has a lot to do with your final resolution! Blu Ray is still very expensive and has it's problems...this is a great stop-gap measure until the technology catches up!

Digital camera Review: Astonishingly Superb Player
Summary: 5 Stars

Some of the products you buy need a long a tedious explanation about what it does and why exactly you may or may not like it. No this player. It is, simply put, the best DVD player I have ever owned without having to spend huge amount of money. It plays my old DVDs, it plays, DiVX DVDs, it plays, XViD DVDs, it plays PAL DVDs. It plays pretty much anything that I have managed to burn and put in it and it does so without the hiccups and errors that so many fancy, upscale, prestigious brands are known for. You can spend $2000 for a Sony, Denon, Onkyo--to name a few--players and they will easily choke on one or more of those formats. Did I mention the outputs? HDMI, SPDIF, component, RCA--all there and each of them works flawlessly. Common sense remote that does not require a PhD to figure out. Packaged like a precious Venetian vase.

That's enough. I really can't come up with anything negative, except that i should have bought one earlier! Very, very highly recommended.

Digital camera Review: Average sound quality and acceptable video quality
Summary: 3 Stars

I owned the OPPO CV 970H before this one, and got this one mainly for the USB2.0 compatibility and the hope it would play movies and shows from my Harddisks.

While the videoquality playing regular DVDs is good, the sound seems weaker than compared with the previous model, although I use HDMI as before. The amplifier has to be turned up much more and an unpleasant humming becomes audible. This was not the case with the 970HD, and I tried all different audiosettings with both the Receiver (ONKYO TX-SR705 7.1 HD) and the DVD player, but unsucessful.

And as per the DIVX compatibility I want to mention that it takes about 5 minutes until the whole Harddisk is read (ok, its a 500 GB HD, quiet full), but this is not acceptable when you want to continue watching your shows and turn your HD and DVDplayer off over night. And it doesnt support subfolders, meaning when you have multiple seasons of shows the have to be all in one folder, and the name should be shorter than 12 letters else you wont be able to see which episode you are about to watch. This could have been solved better.

Unfortunately, if you are looking for a USB capable, upconverting DVD-player, I cannot recommend this DVD-Player anymore, unlike the previous model (which had the annoying limitation of only being USB1.1 compatible)

The PS3 is way superior to this player, and for only 200 USD more you get a bluerayplayer, upconverting DVD player and a high end console in addition.
