Digital camera reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH AudioDigital camera Review: Oppo makes the finest Universal DVD player hands down! Summary: 5 StarsThe Oppo DV-980 offers 7.1 surround sound over HDMI including SA-CD and DVD-Audio for less than $200! It even comes with an HDMI cable and a USB port to plug a jump drive in and watch downloads of most video file formats! This product exceeded my expectations and is the most fantastic sounding unit I have ever heard - bar none! The DVD-Video is also exceptional! The only way you might get some marginal improvement would require spending 150% more on the Oppo Universal Blu-Ray player or some other product in the $500 to $1000+ range. The Oppo DV-980 received great reviews by audiophile magazines and they agree that this many features and this much functionality is a great unit without regard for the reasonable price point!
Digital camera Review: Sweet and easy Summary: 5 StarsSleek appearance, easy to set up and use and really excellent perfomance. I researched players for a year before this purchase and was not disappointed in any way.
Digital camera Review: Don't buy this expecting to play your own DVDs Summary: 2 StarsAll Oppo players are excellent players -- for commercially produced media. But if you expect to play DVDs that you make yourself, they are hit and miss. The player seems to be EXTREMELY picky about layer breaks. I have several dual layer DVDs that will play in every player I've ever put them in EXCEPT the Oppo. When I inquired from Oppo, they asked for a sample disk which I sent them. They agree that there is a problem. This problem has persisted for several years (my previous player, a DV971, had the same issues). They also say it is on the back burner while their engineers focus on "higher priority tasks." Their DVD player does not play DVDs -- how can there be a higher priority task than fixing that? It has been a problem for long enough that Google turns up workarounds.
I will say that for commercially produced disks, and for single layer disks, there is probably not a better player for the money. However, if you expect it to play your dual layer discs, forget it. Sony will play them, Toshiba will play them, JVC will play them, Samsung will play them, LG will play them, Pioneer will play them, Panasonic will play them . . . . and Oppo will just throw up its little hands and claim that there is no second layer. And Oppo, the company, will claim that it is just not a serious problem.
So if your plans do not include playing dual layer disks, buy it. Otherwise, just walk on by.
Digital camera Review: SUPERB All-Region DVD Player! Summary: 5 StarsThis is the first all-region player I've tried that actually does what it claims, and totally hassle-free. Plug in the HDMI and the power, switch it on, enter the region-free code into the remote, and bang -- you're done. Had it playing my European imports in a matter of seconds. And the PQ/AQ? SUPERB. Full 1080p upconversion and the most immersive sound I've ever heard from a DVD player.
At $169.99, it's a STEAL. Take advantage of Amazon's SuperSaver shipping, and it's even better. Received mine in 2 days. :-)
Digital camera Review: Overhyped Summary: 1 StarsAlmost a year ago I bought this to replace my Samsung 1080p upconverting player, which started stuttering (probably because of dust accumulation). I have recently replaced OPPO with a brand name player. So here is what I can tell from my year long experience.
Image quality-wise I did not notice any difference with the Samsung. Not that I compared them side by side but I could not tell any changes unlike after replacing OPPO with a better player. My only issue with Samsung was flaky HDMI - it would often fail to sync if I've turned player on before the TV, the TV would display "Searching for video signal" until I cycled power on the player. OPPO has the same problem. It could be specific to my TV but other HDMI devices I have don't exhibit this behavior. Samsung could handle widescreen disks better though - for example OPPO could only show widescreen Titanic on my 16:9 TV either with black bars on all FOUR sides of the image or with bars AND cropped sides.
Movies image quality is okay and might be considered superb if you replaced an older non-scaling DVD player with an analog connection but I fail to see what got other reviewers excited. Maybe OPPO gives a better picture over analog outputs than other players? I did not use those, only HDMI to a 1080p TV.
It fails miserably on cartoons - jagged lines, broken motion but so did Samsung.
There are other minor technical glitches - once in a couple of weeks it would reset TV aspect settings and switch from bitsteam to stereo PCM audio output and on some DVDs it would get stuck in menus.
I gave it one star because it did not offer any noticeable image quality improvement over a player half of its price. I did not have any use for the additional features like SACD playback and 7.1 output so they do not justify the price premium for me. To see a real improvement I had to go for a player twice the OPPO's price and I don't regret it. I would be much happier though if I did not buy into the hype and skipped OPPO all together.
