Digital camera reviews of OPPO DV-980H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with HDMI and 7.1CH Audio

Digital camera Review: CLEARLY ABOVE THE REST!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

A superior work of machinery!!!! First thing that grabs you is the packaging of this unit! Player comes in a snug fit black bag with a large
silver OPPO logo with a fold down velcro latch flap and supported by soft shock absorbing foam and a snug fit box....impressive! Some major electronic manufacturer's could learn a lesson from this company on how to package a DVD/CD player!!
The unit overall appearence is very nice. Some time & thought seems to have gone into the design of OPPO players. Has a nice pleasent to the eye blue LED readout. As of now I'm using it on a standard analog 27" flat screen TV with an S-video cable and the picture is superior to that of my old GE DVD player. Presently using a optical cable, soundtrack is rich and detailed coming out of my Yamaha HT receiver and really brings out the best in my Dayton Reference Speakers! Hopefully in the near future I will upgrade to a widescreen.. Plenty of adjustment for your picture quality and type of TV your using.

On the audio side, can go up to 7.1 HT and 5.1HT. or regular hookups for basic 2 channel stereo with optical cable, standard RCA analog cables & S-video. Just about every kind of hookup is on the back of this unit!! Another nice feature is SACD's.
According to the manual this feature can be used with an HDMI supported receiver or a standard HT receiver that has standard RCA 7.1 or 5.1 hookups. OPPO encourages you to use this discrete treet!! Certainly read the manual, there is a lot of information in setup to suit your needs!!

I bought this unit for several purposes...Music & Movies!! As a CD player it certainly puts my Sony CE-375 carousel player down a notch or two.Very nice natural sound and not as bright as the Sony and great detail, just using an optical cable! Will be getting a set of cables for 5.1 and maybe buying a few SACD's A pure pleasure for music listening. I am more then satisfied with my purchase of this unit.

An Update On the OPPO DV-980H DVD Player!! Just purchased some really nice RCA patch cables to hook up the 5.1 aspect of my OPPO player to my Yamaha HTR 5930 Receiver and what a nice surprise. Great detailed sound and performance and all the fun and amazement of 5.1 HT. Certainly a big step above dolby surround sound! Can't wait to purchase some SACD's now!

Digital camera Review: Certainly a Fine Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

The Oppo Up-Converting DVD Player arrived just a day ago and it's already proving a great purchase. It can play difficult discs and discs from the 'O' or zero zone as well as the North American Region Zone without trouble. On discs that previously were lacking in definition, a real issue on a large wide screen television, the Oppo player excels. What were once rather lifeless and dull images have been positively revitalized!

Newer already quite excellent DVD's appear sharper and the colors leaner and better defined.

Set up - at least for my needs - was the easiest I've ever experienced. You plug in the power cord, attach the HDMI connection to the television and you're done. The television plays the sound through the HDMI lead.

For much better sound you are offered the full smorgasbord of audio
connections. I'm still playing around with these.

The machine easily handled SACD CD discs and several others such as the less commonly seen DVD Audio.

Summing Up: If you have an available HDMI connection this player should offer practically all possible viewing choices. You can now play some foreign films, those with the zero or universal zone label, as well of course North American region stuff, significantly upgrade the picture on your older DVDs, and of course try any number of other formats.

The key here is the HDMI connection - although the player will handle a plethora of formats, it really struts its stuff using its HDMI lead, and again, be sure your televion or monitor has such a lead to take full advantage of this DVD player.

A great product and I'm happy to agree with the many satisfied customers.

Digital camera Review: Close, but no cigar
Summary: 4 Stars

I now using the Oppo DV-980H for six months. The main reason I chose this model because of the raving reviews by users and technical evaluations by Cnet etc. I have found a confusing inconsistency in all these reviews.

Pro: In my experience the unit is well built, and quite sturdy. This is in contrast of many users (including Cnet) complaining about cheap (plastic) construction and flimsy disk tray. The unit is metal sturdy and metal based and if you ever used a laptop computer you would never call its disk tray anything but sufficient and maybe much better than that. (ALL laptops I have used had flimsier disk trays.

Con: Contrary to the praise of others my second unit still has more problems with tracking than acceptable (none is acceptable). DVDs that play fine on several other units (computers, etc.) fail. Amazon graciously replaced my original unit but the second one behaves the same way. According to OPPO technical service they strive for compability but can not guarantee it with all DVDs. Well they succeeded less, than others. Another big complaint is the illogical design of the controller software, a) the Play button has to be pressed twice to start playing,
b) slow and fast plays are operated by a single button so that you have to cycle through the whole range of selection before reaching the right one. ETC.

It is a good machine but if you are looking for perfection, you must lower your expectations. I won't lower mine, so for me this unit could be improved.

Digital camera Review: Couldn't be better
Summary: 5 Stars

Love the "OPPO". Was looking to get an HD DVD player, but after reading the reviews on the OPPO I decided to go with it.. I am not dissapointed. The set up was extremely easy and the picture is beautiful. May not be HD but if you aren't ready to pay the prices of the HD players and HD DVD's then this is the unit for you. First time I have purchased anything from OPPO but would buy from them again if needed.

Digital camera Review: DO NOT BUY IT
Summary: 1 Stars

Sorry that I read the revews on this unit and bought it. What a BIG mistake!!!

From now on I do not belive what anyone say on here!!!

I have a bose 321. The pic actually looks better (less granulation at 480i) then oppo dvd player set at 1080i via hdmi.
