Digital camera reviews of Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder

Digital camera Review: Awsome Digital Recorder and SOO Versitile.
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased the DS-30 and I am impressed. I was going to use this recorder for recording music that my voice teacher played. However I now see that it is much better. I actually used my DS-30 to create sound effects with. I can actually use the unit with my portable field mixer with phantom power and using good shotgun record sound effects. It's a super quiet unit. I can import the files in to pro-tools and using the effects it is quite easy to get a good recording for use in my voice over work. I use the unit in STXQ mode with Dictation gain on. It is super quiet and I get great recordings that are crisp and clean. Pro-Tools does not notice any background noise at all. It's awesome. I am going to be recording all my own sound effects from now on. Awesome device I would highly recommend it.

Digital camera Review: Best Digital Recorder Ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently bought the Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder, and i am happy to say that it is one of the best purchases I have made. The microphone, along with the sensitivity settings that are built in, are able to not only pick up a lecture from the background of the lecture hall, but are able to filter out most background noise as well. The battery seems to las a really long time to, I use this recorder 4 hours a day and have not had to replace the battery yet! Alli in all, a great purchase, i would recommend this product for anyone wanting a quality recorder!

Digital camera Review: Best recorder at a great price
Summary: 5 Stars

Recording quality blows a much more expensive Sony out of the water. Much more important is how easy it is to use unlike the Sony.

Digital camera Review: Big Quality in a Small Package
Summary: 5 Stars

I got my DS-30 last week and I love it! This is the first digital stereo voice recorder I have owned. I am very impressed with the quality of manufacturing and the quality of the recordings. I uploaded some photos above to show the size of the unit and the contents of the package.

The DS-30 can record with or without the attachable stereo microphone. This mic is so small though that even attached it still fits in my pocket.

The "Hold" feature is nice. Press the Hold button will lock the DS-30 buttons until taken off hold. This is handy if you are moving around a lot or want to save the current recording or playback settings without fear of accidentally touching any of the buttons.

It has a lot great features for recording both dictation (voice in quiet, close quarters) and conferences (voice in large, noisy rooms). These features include a Variable Control Voice Actuator which will automatically turn on/off the recorder based upon the volume level it senses, a microphone sensitivity setting and a Low Cut Filter. (Playback mode also has features like noise cancellation and voice filter.)

The DS-30 can playback AVI and MP3 files. It can also play Audible format files as well as Podcasts. The device has a full-featured menu including adjustments for backlight, contrast and LED, powersave, 3 alarms and a voice guide. The alarms are very kewl. You can set them to play various alarms sounds or even use one or your own recordings!

The D3-30 comes with ear buds and it can play MP3 and AVI files. I transferred some music to it and the quality of the MP3 player is really nice! I am not an audiophile but the DS-30 plays MP3s every bit as well as they sound on my laptop.

Transferring files from my D3-30 to my computer was plug-n-play easy. I just attached the USB cable to my PC. Windows XP immediately recognized my DS-30 as a new device and displayed it as a new drive letter in my Windows Explorer list of drives. I could drag-n-drop files to and from, including MP3s. It could not be any easier. I did not install the DS-30 software. At this point I won't even need it and I prefer not to install a bunch of unnecessary software on my computer.

The DS-30 package comes with:
DS-30 Digital Stereo recorder
User Manual (well written)
2 AAA batteries
Ear buds
USB cable
Olympus DSS software

* Optional accessories include a remote control, telephone pickup and AC adapter.

Digital camera Review: Blown away by the sound quality!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am really blown away by the sound quality of these Olympus Digital Voice Recorders. This is my second one; I previously owned the VN2100 but decided to upgrade (see my review for the VN2100).

Pretty intuitive functions/buttons/menus, and my experience with the battery life has been good. Like all Olympus digital recorders, the SP and LP quality recording modes are pretty bad. (If it's a loud lecturer or close-to-mouth dictation, you don't have to worry much, just a bit gritty sounding.) To get a decent smooth-sounding recording you need to record in HQ or XHQ, which takes up a lot more memory, and thus leaves you with less room on the recorder time-wise. Would be annoying except with this model you can download your files to your computer and free up space on the device.

Another feature of this model is that is has a removable stereo microphone in case you don't want mono recording. It's really not necessary for lectures or dictation, but can provide a really nice, super-high quality stereo recording if you want.

I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. My only pseudo complaint/criticism is that it is not as attractive as the VN2100 or some of the other models. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic product that is well worth the money.
