Digital camera reviews of Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice RecorderDigital camera Review: Great Device - Poor Software Summary: 4 Stars
I've only had 2 of these things so far. I generally use them to record my classes so that I can take notes later. Sony makes a cheaper model for about $50 (P520), but that model broke after 1 semester. The DS-30 has much better sound quality and has several modes of recording (for lecture recording vs. dictation) which I like. I actually dropped it today and the screen froze... which was a first, but after I took out the batteries and put them back it checked itself, saved the file and continued to work perfectly from there on. The only complaint I have is the computer software. The software is picky about letting you move and save files. It also doesn't have a jump ahead/jump back feature. When you are trying to transcribe notes and you type slowly you may need to jump back 10 seconds to repeat what you just heard. This device's software lets you rewind but you never know how long to hold down the rewind button. Other software will let you skip back or forward by different amounts of time.
In summation... great device, blah software, but you can always just get free software online. It's not that hard to find.

This voice recorder is great. the sound quality is fantastic and the price is fair.
I use camtasia to record the video and use this recorder for the audio.
The sound is clear enough to make DVD tutorial.

Digital camera Review: Great Recorder! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this recorder to use for my Sweet Adelines practices. The quality of sound is fantastic. The microphone picks up everything and I never get that horrible buzz/scratching sound, no matter how loud the input. It's also great for just carrying my music with me anywhere. I use it often for long periods of time and the batteries seem to last forever. I found the voice prompter annoying, but was able to get rid of her. :) Very easy to use, the screen is easy to read too.
I'm very pleased with my purchase.
Digital camera Review: Great Sound Quality - No Rewind Button Summary: 2 Stars
I was a novice to the digital voice recorder industry when I bought my DS30. I thought it would be a good replacement for my Dictaphone, however, nothing in the product description warned me that common features found on tape recorders, like fast forward, rewind and the ability to record over a section are considered "advanced" and "advanced professional" features. For those entering the digital voice recording arena beware, if the product description does not say the voice recorder has "advanced" features like rewind, fast forward, overwrite and/or insert, it doesn't.
